Proposal: The Role of Research at Community Colleges Seeking 5-7 participants for roundtable for the ISA West Conference, September 25-26, 2026, Pasadena, CA. What is the role of research at community colleges? The conventional answer to this question is that, since research activity is not a requirement for tenure, it plays a negligible role. This roundtable seeks to expand the discussion beyond this very narrow notion of research by examining the different ways in which research shows up at community colleges. In addition to maintaining active research agendas, community college faculty may assign scholarly articles, use research assignments, and perhaps even include instruction on the craft of research. Research may inspire course design and instruction, teaching may inspire research, and instruction and course design can become the subjects of research. Lastly, research can be thought of as a form of professional development and maintaining current knowledge in the field of instruction. How does research manifest at community colleges in these different forms? Can we identify trends and best practices? And how does research in its multiple forms contribute to the broader mission of community colleges? Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the following: ● Maintaining a research agenda ● Scholarly research as course material ● Research assignments ● Teaching research ● Researching teaching ● Research as professional development ● Teaching as inspiration for research ● Critical perspectives on the role of research at community colleges If you have experience with the topic (broadly defined) and are interested in participating, please send me an email with a 1-2 sentence explanation of how you plan to contribute to this discussion no later than Friday, April 24, 5pm Pacific Time. CALL FOR Proposals for the 18th Pan-European Conference on International Relations, 25-29 August, University of Bologna, Italy. Panel Title: Diplomatic Practice Across Global Time and Space Abstract: The (re)turn to global history in International Relations (IR) is contributing to a growing body of research focused on how international relations were organized prior to the nineteenth century and outside of Europe. Balancing competing demands of the particular (history) and the general (theory), scholars have worked to recover historical international relations on their own terms while simultaneously revising existing and building new theories. What counts as ‘international relations’ in pre-modern global history? Scholars have cautioned against reading concepts derived primarily from modern Western contexts into the global past. Exploring the productive intersection of the historical turn and the turn to practice, this panel aims to examine pre-modern diplomatic practice in different geographic contexts. Though diplomacy was neither exclusive to entities we now recognize as states nor strictly separate from activities such as trade or cultural exchange before the nineteenth century, the individual papers explore the distinct practices through which polities and their rulers engaged and constituted each other as such. Overall, this panel seeks to engage with pre-modern diplomatic practices across different geographic and cultural contexts with the goal of clarifying how variable forms of interaction may be theorized as specific instances of a general class of actions.
