Each year we work out how to balance the public transport budget and it’s usually a mix of undesirable choices - increasing rates, increasing fares or cutting services. Most people would rather we reduced rates, reduced fares and increased services, but I’ve yet to learn the magic spell for that. This year we face a $3m shortfall to cover Metlink costs, even after trimming, reprioritising and some low-impact rationalisations. Overall, we’re also aiming to bring the regional average rates increase down under 10% from 13%(forecast)/17%(reality).* So we need to find $3m from fares and tomorrow (Thursday) we need to decide how much should come from overall fare increase v how much from lowering off-peak discount. Or, do neither and instead hike rates or cut more services. My view is that we should aim to maintain patronage, stick as closely as possible to the policy of increasing overall fares by inflation (2%), and lower the off-peak discount but keep it meaningful. Text screenshot reading: Hello - i've been watching the increasing radicalisation of NZ social media in the Trump era, and with recent events in Minnesota it has reached new extremes. The comments section of every RNZ news story about ICE is quickly filled with fascist talking points. These comments go far beyond what would have been acceptable a few years ago. There are outright celebrations of the murder of innocents taking place under your news stories. It is imperative you take some action to stop your hard work becoming a home and vector for fascism. Either moderate the comments aggressively, or close them completely. You are fully entitled to do both without explanation, although the awful people will scream about it. Whatever engagement metric you are using that makes these comments desirable is fundamentally broken. Now is the right moment to fix this. Noone will miss these comment sections except the people looking for avenues to spread hatred. Thank you Morgan Davie
morgue Letterboxd review: Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out! 1989 Watched 26 Jan 2026 Kinda obsessed with this. Twin Peaks prequel energy with dream sequences, whispers of "Laura", Richard Beamer and Eric da Re running around, plus Laura Harring from Mulholland Drive, and that's just the first five minutes. Samantha Scully gives an odd lead performance as a blind girl whose only discernible character trait is "rude bitch", Eric da Re is her adorable himbo brother with whom she has Folger sibling energy, not helped by Laura Harring as the brother's hot girlfriend who looks identical to his sister. The vibes are weird. And the killer walks slowly everywhere, and the blind final girl walks slowly everywhere, and they do a great job"now we're even" bit where blind girl smashes the lightbulb but it achieves precisely nothing, and the killer is finally dispatched when he carefully kneels down and then flings himself on a pointy stake. It's an accidental self-impalement achieved in the most unlikely of ways! Meanwhile Richard Beymer acts his pants off soliloquising about the nature of humanity and evil, while Robert Culp swans in halfway through to tell dirty jokes (at least I think they're dirty, the punchlines are bleeped out on the YouTube rip i watched) and waggle his eyebrows. Best bit is where the killer knows his targets are upstairs in a bedroom so he goes into a different bedroom, climbs under the bed, and waits there for some reason. Oh and Bill Mosley as the killer has his brain out the whole time. And signs off at the end with a happy new year to camera. Loved it. Would watch again.
