The original expression was "tomber dans les pâmes" - "pâmer" being an archaic French verb which meant "to faint". At this point, nothing to do with apples whatsoever. But over time misuse gave way to convention and "pâmes" became "pommes", the accepted spelling 🍎 #Untranslatableidioms
