Basic rule of law is always preferable. Even if it was far from complete. The undoing of the US has been a long time coming, from Nixon's treason to electing clown Reagan and the Republican party's attack tactics. The Democratic party went along for the ride, expecting to swing into power.

“functioning & sane” is a considerably lower bar than “great”. It’s so much lower it could be cleared by an inanimate rock. Yes, I’m saying the United States, nay even the planet, would literally be better off if the president were an inanimate rock.
It doesn’t have to be great to be much better than today.
