This is a photo shot straight down of medium grey asphalt with a vertical cracking pattern that exposes pale grey aggregate. Next to the vertical cracking pattern is a horizontal oriented oak leaf that glows golden with late afternoon sunlight. It has an abstract Christmas tree vibe to me.

A close up of a dry curled Sweet Gum tree leaf lies on a concrete walkway. The low angle of the delicately golden early morning light emphasizes the texture of the decorative grooves and fine grain of exposed aggregate in the concrete. The sunlight casts a long stark dramatic shadow from the leaf across the ground. While that same light coats the left facing side of the leaf with a satin honeyed smoothness of ancient wood caressed by generations of tiny hands. Every so often, a little puff of icy air would cause the leaf to scuttle crab like across the concrete making clear scrabbling noise in the near silence. I crouched watching it for a very long time.
