A video posted on X, and a Facebook post sharing stills from the clip, are captioned: “BREAKING NEWS IRAN has blown up the Haifa power plant with a ballistic missile. With the destruction of this 828 MW power plant, half of Israel is living in darkness.” But these photos and videos were not taken in Israel. They match footage shared on YouTube on 18 November 2015 with captions referring to an incident in China. False label overlay.

From the national broadcaster to individual social media users, we can’t be too vigilant about the risk of misleading our audiences. Full Fact urges the BBC board to remember that owning up to mistakes is only half the story—correcting the record quickly and transparently is absolutely critical to earning back people’s trust.

This is a difficult balance to get right, but if everything becomes a matter of opinion—if it is always my facts versus your facts—nothing can ever be questioned or debated effectively.

We cannot let large online platforms which wield so much influence over our daily lives walk away from commitments to make our online world a safer place. Government and regulators must hold them to account, to the full extent of the law. This is no time for half measures.

Thank you to industry minister Sarah Jones MP for correcting an error she made during a House of Commons debate last month, following our request. Written correction submitted by the Minister for Industry, the hon. Member for Croydon West (Sarah Jones): The hon. Gentleman talks about the Government’s policies for growing the economy. A few months ago, we held an international investment summit, at which £63 billion of investment was announced. As I have mentioned, there was £2 billion announced in the Budget for the automotive industry. Interest rates have been cut three times, wages are up, and more than 70,000 jobs have been secured in the UK since the Government came to power. The International Monetary Fund and the OECD predict that the UK will be Europe’s fastest-growing major G7 economy in the coming years. The industrial strategy was scrapped under the last Government; our industrial strategy will be the backbone of ensuring that we deliver growth…

By refusing to sign today’s international AI Action Statement the UK Government risks undercutting its hard-won credibility as a world leader for safe, ethical and trustworthy AI innovation. Fact checkers around the world are working hard to put AI at the heart of our efforts to improve the online information environment, but we need bolder government action to protect people from corrosive AI-generated misinformation that can damage public health and disrupt democracy at unprecedented speed and scale.
Meta’s decision to end its partnership with fact checkers in the US is disappointing and a backwards step that risks a chilling effect around the world. From safeguarding elections to protecting public health to dissipating potential unrest on the streets, fact checkers are first responders in the information environment. Locking fact checkers out of the conversation won’t help society to turn the tide on rapidly rising misinformation.
