The ethical subject is the subject that confronts its own lack and recognizes this same lack in others. To recognize one’s lack is to be able to limit oneself. A purely excessive being such as one of Ayn Rand’s creators would have no ability to limit itself for the sake of others. Such a being would be profoundly contemptuous of morality, as Rand’s heroes are. They refuse the sacrifice that morality demands. As John Galt says during his long speech in Atlas Shrugged, “A sacrifice is the surrender of a value. Full sacrifice is full surrender of all values.” Sacrifice for the sake of morality betrays the philosophy of nonlacking excess that provides the foundational idea for the logic of capitalism. The capitalist dream of a pure excess leaves no room for the lack that is the starting point for all ethical activity. The basic anticapitalist gesture is to insist on the structural necessity of lack for the attainment of excess. As long as anticapitalists vie for a world of pure excess, they remain within the capitalist logic that they attempt to contest. To call for excess without lack is to remain in the thrall of the commodity form. Capitalism does not deceive us by preaching that the excessiveness of enjoyment is the point of our existence, that excess is what makes our lives worth living. It has this right. But what it gets wrong is the insistence that we must attain excess without any stain of lack: we must find the perfect commodity, accumulate enough capital to reach perfect abundance, or discover the secret of the unending orgasm. This capitalist project has its basis in a misconception of excess, one that permits no inherent limitation on this excess, no taint on its perfect image. As Marx understands, this project points the way to its own evanescence. Once we embrace the impossibility and undesirability of overcoming lack, capitalism’s logic comes apart at the seams. With some interpassive acts, the figurative moment is still clearly recognizable. Intellectuals, for example, often photocopy hundreds of pages from books in the library and then go home with a feeling of deep satisfaction. In doing this, they often have never considered that the photocopier might have just ‘read’ the texts for them. Should they be aware of their satisfaction, they trace it back to the fact that they now own the texts and can read them whenever they like – even if they know that it is unlikely that they will ever do so. The satisfaction, already present, is imagined (if at all) as something that will take place in the future; on the other hand, as a rule, the delegation of reading to the copier does not play a role. Yet through this they have delivered a very clear staging of reading: via a machine that runs through the book, page-for-page and in linear succession, offering every passage of text the spotlight of attention, as it were. They have acted out ‘reading’ for someone else, without even noticing it. The figurative nature of their little magic act equals that of voodoo, thus revealing a further, apparently paradoxical property of interpassive magic: so-called ‘primitives’ seem clear about what they are doing when they perform magic. On the contrary, through their interpassive acts, so-called ‘civilized people’ perform magic without even noticing. The structure of our satisfaction depends on what is absent. We become engaged in a satisfying way when we work to accomplish something, when we struggle to realize what isn’t immediately doable. No one would enjoy a game that they won instantly every time that they played. One would quickly abandon such a game as boring and not worth the effort. It is only the lack of mastery in the game that makes the game satisfying, which is why more people play chess than tic-tac-toe. No matter one’s skill level, chess reminds one constantly that one fails as a subject. Even Grandmasters don’t have complete mastery when it comes to playing chess. There is always a something missing in one’s game that enables one to enjoy continuing to play by giving one something to work on. The chess champion who could not lose would quickly lose interest in being a chess champion anymore. Our ability to enjoy anything depends on what we don’t have, not what we do.
