My reply to OP: What worse things could come out about them than what we already know or suspect, and who would hold them to account if it did? Threats, maybe. Blackmail in 2026 seems nearly impossible.

Comment left on the quoted article: This may sound crazy, and it would definitely make more sense for me to be wrong, but something really feels off here. I’ve been digging for over an hour and have yet to come across any evidence for this that isn’t either easy to manufacture with anonymous online reports, or something that I could edit together myself with absolutely no skills. Maybe it’s the alien conspiracists rubbing off on me, but it definitely seems like certain personalities have an investment in this being an event that is not only legitimate, but dangerous.
