Die rechtspopulistischen Parteien von heute sind ökonomisch links, schreibt der Politikwissenschaftler Philip Manow in seinem neuen Buch. Um zu verstehen, wie es dazu kommen konnte, müsse man die Auswirkungen der Europäisierung auf nationale Parteiensysteme in den Blick nehmen. Unser Rezensent Floris Biskamp forscht zur Wirtschafts- und Sozialpolitik der AfD und kann Manows Thesen wenig abgewinnen: Die Idee vom ökonomisch linken Rechtspopulismus sei empirisch nicht haltbar, Manow scheitere an seinen eigenen „überzogenen Ansprüchen“.

But what is so worrying about the Gen-Z socialists is how deeply their ideas are bleeding into the centre-left. Desperate to compete, even mainstream Democrats in America now propose mad schemes like exempting over half of tax filers from federal income tax. In Britain the Labour Party, having won power on a centrist platform, has been spooked by the Greens and is rekindling its zeal for higher taxes and state control. Increasingly, the ideas of the Gen-Z socialists can win even when their candidates lose.

STANDARD: Was hätten Sie ihn denn gerne gefragt?

Rau: Ich hätte ihm etwa zehn Beispiele von Gottesstaaten aufgezählt, in denen letztlich immer Menschen gebrannt haben und Frauen unterdrückt wurden. Warum, glaubt er, dass es mit einem religiös inspirierten Unternehmer-Staat, den er anstrebt, anders wäre? Oder will er eh genau das? Warum glaubt er entgegen der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, dass Wettbewerb schlecht und Monopole gut sind? Warum glaubt er, dass der kapitalistische Wohlfahrtsstaat am Ende sein soll? Warum soll Greta Thunberg der Antichrist sein? Alles Fragen, die eine demokratische Öffentlichkeit interessieren sollten. Aber ich sage dazu: Wenn man so eine Veranstaltung plant, ist Kontext alles. Und den hätten wir geliefert.

Die politische Annäherung an die Rechte ist zum Scheitern verurteilt, sagen Sie. War es die Strategie der Brandmauer auch?
Die Brandmauer-Strategie ist zum Scheitern verurteilt, wenn sie nicht Teil einer umfassenderen Strategie ist. Die extreme Rechte ist ein Symptom, nicht die Ursache der Demokratiekrise. Wenn ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung mit dem politischen System unzufrieden ist, kann man versuchen, die dadurch erstarkenden Rechts-außen-Parteien auszugrenzen. Doch indem man den Menschen das Ventil wegnimmt, ändert man nichts an ihrer Unzufriedenheit. Die meisten Menschen glauben nicht, dass die AfD ihre Probleme lösen wird.
Warum wählen sie sie dann?
Sie wünschen sich eine ermächtigende Erzählung. Und Politiker, die ihnen das Gefühl vermitteln, dass es vorwärtsgeht, und die Kompetenz ausstrahlen. Emmanuel Macron ist das anfangs, im Wahlkampf 2017, in gewissem Umfang gelungen. Ein solcher Ansatz ist jedoch nicht Teil der Brandmauer-Strategie. Sie zielt nur darauf ab, die extreme Rechte von der Macht fernzuhalten. Das kann bestenfalls über einen kurzen Zeitraum funktionieren. Wenn man ständig warnt: „Wählt nicht rechts“, dann sagen sich die Menschen irgendwann: „Meine einzige Wahl ist der Status quo oder die Rechte. Den Status quo habe ich lange genug gehabt. Der funktioniert für mich nicht. Also wähle ich jetzt die Rechte.“

Rau: Wir dürfen nicht länger naiv sein, glaube ich. Der globale Mind-Shift ist fast abgeschlossen, und zwar genau deshalb, weil wir unsere Augen und liberalen Bühnen davor verschlossen haben. Sie haben Palantir angesprochen, oder nehmen wir SpaceX, das sind privat geführte Firmen, die real die Welt kontrollieren, jenseits aller demokratischen Einflussnahme. Ist uns das wirklich bewusst? Wenn es irgendetwas gebracht hätte, sich in den letzten dreißig Jahren nicht mit diesen Tatsachen und Ideen zu konfrontieren, ihnen keine kritische Plattform zu geben, dann würde ich sagen: Ja, lasst uns den Kopf nochmal eine Generation in den Sand stecken! Es hat aber nur dazu geführt, dass die Rechte ein ökonomisches, mediales und gesellschaftliches Paralleluniversum errichtet hat. Wann sollen wir uns damit auseinandersetzen, wenn nicht jetzt? Die Pressesprecherin des Festivals bleibt offiziell zurückhaltend. Weder bestätigen noch dementieren wolle man. Nach Informationen des STANDARD steht jedoch fest: Der US-Tech-Milliardär Peter Thiel wird Anfang Juni nach Wien kommen – eingeladen von Intendant Milo Rau, der schon im STANDARD-Interview Andeutungen zu Thiel machte.

Produce and reproduce! Understanding multidimensionality
in contemporary radical right populist ideology

ABSTRACT
Radical right populism represents a multidimensional and transforming
ideology. This contribution tackles the complexity of radical
right populism by drawing a theoretical framework based upon
two related concepts: producerism and reproducerism. While the
first is a well-known notion in the literature on populism, the
second is introduced here as a complementary concept that
involves reproductive politics, including natality and the family.
This paper aims to highlight the theoretical advantage afforded
by the related concepts of producerism and reproducerism, first
by connecting the economic, cultural, and demographic dimensions
of radical right populism. Then, it will illustrate their usefulness
in capturing the contextually sensitive configurations of
producerism and reproducerism enacted by current political and
social actors in Europe and the United States.

Rationalizing Democracy: The Perceptual Bias and (Un)Democratic Behavior by SUTHAN KRISHNARAJAN
Abstract
Democracy often confronts citizens with a dilemma: stand firm on democracy while losing out on policy or accept undemocratic behavior and gain politically. Existing literature demonstrates that citizens generally choose the latter—and that they do so deliberately. Yet there is an alternative possibility. Citizens can avoid this uncomfortable dilemma altogether by rationalizing their understandings of democracy. When a politician advances undesired policies without violating democratic rules and norms, people find ways to perceive the behavior as undemocratic. When a politician acts undemocratically to promote desired policies, citizens muster up arguments for considering it democratic. Original survey experiments in the United States, and 22 democracies worldwide, provide strong support for this argument. It is thus not deliberate acceptance, but a fundamentally different perceptual logic that drives the widespread approval of undemocratic behavior in today’s democracies.

I was not 100% sure about the future of Hungary, but now I'm very black-pilled. If such a breach of form, such noneuropean fidgeting, is possible and cheered on and normalized in the center of state power, it means a big blow to the soul of a nation.

People who say that I am exaggerating here and should chill don't understand that there's something sacred to this level of politics. Profanizing it in that way is very demasking, and I really fear for the future of Hungary.

Title: Asymmetric Mass Mobilization and the Vincibility of Democracy in Hungary

Abstract: Using an original dataset of partisan protest events in Hungary (n = 4836) spanning 1989 to 2011, we argue that left-liberal parties’ neglect in cultivating civil society during the post-communist period had deleterious downstream effects on Hungarian liberal democracy. First, it enabled the growth of an illiberal, right-wing civil society that facilitated Fidesz-KDNP’s 2010 landslide electoral victory. Second, it deprived the left-liberals of mobilization resources that could have been used to carry out contentious collective action to counter Fidesz-KDNP’s early maneuvers at democratic backsliding, in particular their constitutional overhaul. The data allow us to trace patterns in partisan protest over time and across cities, illustrating the dangers of asymmetric mass mobilization (AMM) during the prevention and containment periods.

Nach der Eröffnungszeremonie des Symposiums am kommenden Mittwoch tritt er in einem einstündigen Gespräch mit dem bulgarischen Politologen Ivan Krăstev auf, einem vehementen Verfechter liberaler Demokratien. Danach in einem einstündigen Talk mit der bekannten St.Galler Amerikanistik-Professorin Claudia Brühwiler und am Tag darauf noch in einer geschlossenen Session, die nur wenigen Symposiums-Teilnehmern zugänglich sein wird.

Soweit wird es nicht kommen. Denn Bedenken wegen der Auftritte Yarvins gibt es bei den Veranstaltern nicht. Curtis Yarvin sei nicht eingeladen worden, weil das St.Gallen Symposium seine Positionen teile, sagt Symposium-CEO Beat Ulrich. «Ideologisch einflussreiche Stimmen verlieren jedoch nicht durch Ausblendung an Wirkung, sondern durch fundierten Widerspruch, Kontextualisierung und offene Gegenrede.»

When the Personal Becomes Political: Sexual Assault and Women’s Political Engagement

Abstract: Canonical feminist texts describe how some women have found political meaning in their identities as sexual assault survivors. Drawing on interviews, we develop a theory about whether, how, and for whom sexual violence compels women’s political participation. For some women, sexual violence shatters victims’ core beliefs in ways that facilitate personal growth and resilience. This process is often facilitated by solidaristic ties with other survivors, through which women crystallize their interests around the right to be free from violence and their demands for state responsiveness. We test implications of our theory with an original survey of American women. Women who report having experienced sexual assault or rape report higher levels of political participation than otherwise similar women. This association is stronger among Democratic women and those with higher socioeconomic status, and weaker among Black women. Although reactions vary, participating in politics allows some survivors to turn their pain into purpose.
