But also go up or down on the hue spectrum a few stops as well! If you've got blue, add in a little green. If you're got orange, add in some red.

It can be subtle or striking, depending how far you push it, but it just looks so much nicer than simply having a more muddy version of the same colour.

well keep in mind that you actually want to blue-shift shadows. blues should stay blue, reds should become purple, greens become more cyan, etc. that's because ambient sky light is blue. in an orange-lit room, orange-shift your colors instead, for example.

Genuinely, thank you so much for this post Mark. I've been an artist for 5 years, so I didn't actually need this tip at all, but it's a great confidence boost to be reminded that the people I find inspirational (like you) started off just as clueless about my own creative field as I am of theirs.
