5 star letterboxd review "This review may contain spoilers. Yeah, this movie was made for me in a lab. I love a murder mystery that explores the humanity behind the crime, and I think this movie has delivered even more on that than any other Knives Out movie. As far as the mystery itself goes, everything's great. I knew who the victim was from frame one, but that's hardly an issue. It does the fantastic thing of showing you things and then changing the context of those things in a way that would make you feel stupid if you weren't too busy being impressed by how well done it is. I knew from the second that the trailer showed the religious setting, this film would deliver on another conflict I love in mystery: belief VS truth. While this didn't quite dip into the full derangement that I enjoy from a spiritually-charged murder, it still did everything I wanted it to with regards to the detective (always the outsider) serving as this warrior-like figure, fighting a battle for the truth that absolutely no one else wants. While I usually dislike the "Let's just all be friends" ending in these times of fascism, I respect the stance the movie takes with its ending. After a film about a horrible man who thrives on branding the wicked and casting them out, a man who builds an entire platform off of this rhetoric, you see Benoit walk the same path at the end - he takes power by rising up to the same pulpit, raised above the whole room, and makes his whole grand speech about getting the checkmate moment he''s been chasing. And he sees the face of the woman he's about to ruin and he steps down instead, ironically acting much more Christian than anyone else in that building. Making a detective story and then taking the big part of the ending, the big "how it was done" speech where both the detective and the writer takes his bow to the expectant audience, and then taking away the satisfaction of that moment to deliver a lesson on mercy and on resisting the urge to get one ov…
