In Capital, Marx argues that the concept of money itself drives greed since there is no upper limit to how much of it one can reasonably acquire. This makes it different from say, shoes or food or houses or anything else one might collect; because it can *always* be exchanged for *anything* else. Given that, it makes perfect sense that the Federation, vibes not theory communism writ large, would abolish money as part of a cultural reorientation towards human flourishing; but not really consider the impact downstream on commerce. I doubt Roddenberry was a deep political thinker, and by the time he died it wasn't fashionable anymore for writers to care about Marxist economics. (Source: I'm a political historian)."
