A funny page from Sabine excellent Lost in Math I finally go to the beach. Sea turtles peek through the waves. The water is clear and the sand is white, its coarse grains oddly shaped. Garret's girlfriend, Crystal, tells me the grains are made by a little fish, the parrotfish, which munches coral and, when done digest-ing, returns the remainder to the ocean. The fish's native Hawaiian name, uhu palukaluka, translates to "loose bowels." Adult parrotfish each produce more than 800 pounds of sand a year, which adds up to tons and tons for the whole fish population. I slather on sunscreen and dig my toes into the sand. There's a lesson to be learned here, I think: if you pile up enough of it, even shit can look beautiful.
