I close my eyes and silently curse my big brother for not being able to land the girl. It’s not that hard; he grew up watching the same Disney movies I did. You go after the princess, you search the town with her shoe just to find her, you wake her up with your kiss. You kidnap her dad and then do a prisoner swap so you can keep her instead… Maybe Disney films aren’t the best example. Either way, this isn’t rocket science.

“Don’t pretend you’ve never measured it. That’s what guys do, right? You must have had a group of friends at some point?” I challenge.
I’m desperate for some words of wisdom from my best friend. She’s been here for it all, for every step of building myself up, of keeping myself guarded from members of the opposite sex. Everything. She knows me better than anyone else. “Then, fuck him.” I blink at her. That’s not quite the encouragement I was after.
I move quickly, grabbing a semi-clean white sheet and a foot stool. As I’m hanging it up, Pix gasps from the top of the stairs. “You’re an artist?” She tentatively walks forward, her eyes scanning the numerous works that fill the space. “You could say that.” I strain as I try and reach the clip I secured here, for moments like this; when I need to hang sheets. The need arises more than you would think.
She turns so we’re facing and for a brief moment, she looks pleased to see me, before she remembers herself and sets her mouth into a straight line. “You pulled me away from my dance partner, Jones.” She loops her hands around my neck and starts to dance again. I pull her close to me as our hips synchronise, moving to the tempo of the music. “This is our song.” “We don’t have a song.” She gives me an exasperated look and a pained sigh. “Jen, when two people share a night like we did and it involved dancing to a Whitney Houston song, it becomes their song.”
