Anyone following the way this debate has developed at Westminster over the past year may think that a social media ban for under 16s is inevitable. Within months, the government has gone from saying a ban would be unworkable to sounding on the verge of implementing one. But, in interviews this morning, Liz Kendall, the technology secretary, stressed that this was nota done deal. She told the Today Programme: "We do think it's right to have a consultation on whether or not to ban social media for the under-16s Lots of people have made up their minds, Lord Nash (the Tory peer who tabled the amendment that led to the government defeat in January) included. But let me just say this. There are organisations, including the NSPCC and the Molly Rose Foundation and the Internet Watch Foundation, who are worried that a ban wouldn't solve the problem because it would just force some of this stuff deeper [into the dark web], that the children would try and get around it, that it would create a cliff edge at 16. So I think it is the right and responsible thing to do to have a consultation."
The battle for the right might be the big story in politics at the moment but the conflict on the left is no less brutal. Labour’s digital blitz will intensify in the coming days as the party critiques Green policies on issues like defence. ‘I don’t think there is anyone I hate more in politics than Polanski,’ says a pro-Starmer MP. Countering the positivity of the Green brand is a challenge for Labour campaigners. ‘It’s like kicking a puppy,’ groans one. In Australia, the Labor party took several cycles to work out how best to attack the Greens. The same might be true for Labour here.

It would be a historic mistake to limit them now. My piece for @Telegraph 👇🏿 The crown court backlog stood at 37,000 cases before the crisis, and the Government did not consider restricting on jury trials. The backlog is now around 41,000 and the prospect is being raised. Why is this change proportionate now? Replacing juries with a judge and two magistrates would reduce the diversity of those making life changing decisions about guilt. As the #BlackLivesMatter movement makes its voice heard, it would be wrong to ignore the reality of unconscious bias in our justice system. There is an inevitable risk that once jury trials are suspended for certain crimes, they will never come back. The Government should not drop the high standards of jury trials in the face of a challenge, but instead look at creative measures and reforms to meet it.

Wow, this extract from Wolff's book is a shocking insight into Trump's mind: On his first night in the White House, President Trump complained that the TV in his bedroom was broken, because it didn't have "the gorlla channel". Trump seemed to be under the impression that a TV chanmel existed that screened nothing but gorilla-based content, 24 hours a day: To appeasc Trump, White House staff' compiled a number of gorilla documentaries into a makeshift gorilla channel, broadcast into Trump's bedroom from a hastily-constructed transmission tower on the South Lawn. However, Trump was unhappy with the channel they had created. moaning that it Was "boring" because ""the gorillas aren't fighting". Staffedited out lthe parts of the documentaries where gorillas weren't hitting each other, and at last the president was satisfied "On some days he`ll watch the gorilla channel for hours straight," an insider told me. ""He kneels in front of the Ty, with his face about four inches from the screen, and says encouraging things to the gorillas, like 'the way you hit that other gorilla was good'. Of the prime ministers I have seen up close, Tony Blair, David Cameron and Boris Johnson all looked similarly comfortable with the pressure. Yet Starmer is qualitatively different from each of them. He does not carry the missionary conviction of Blair or the patrician authority of Cameron. The mocking nihilism of Johnson is about as far from Starmerite earnestness as is possible to imagine. Starmer is something else: a manager.
