When you buy something to support the artist, but your money doesn’t go to the artist, maybe there’s an argument that you still are supporting the artist because the corporation it did go to is counting it, and had a hand in funding the art, and this influences whether they do it again, but now we’re in a highly speculative area, knowing nothing for sure except that we’re contributing to something negative; we hope we’re also contributing to something positive in some indirect way. If we are, it’s a drop in the ocean, and the money we’re spending from our limited pool would mean more spent on smaller artists than corporations are willing to fund in the first place. Maybe that’s the responsibility that matters: to throw your weight at things it can actually shift.
