I've been asked to try and teach closed E and chose red as one of my key words, since color words are a great transition point for growing ones lexicon. There's a lot of colors and you can call them all sorts of things. Th'rysa is a made up word that is like Theresa but I made it fantasy. The y makes an open 👁️ sound. Deep is a fun EE vowel team and Gnome both an odd GN rule with a cool VCE ending to it. Language is cool.
I drew right in pencil first and then stared to do body in colored pencils with students nearby/observing. I asked them to hand me an arbitrary number of colored pencils (3) of any color. They handed me colors and I chose random places to add it. Some that made sense and many that don't. They asked me about this. Nearby they had been making "paint" by mixing copious amounts of marker with copious amounts of pencil graphite smear. It is a problem in material waste but more in material management, of which is needed. I push kids for colored pencils because of this, as well as its ability to show them how to take care of materials by observing and participating in their lifespans (ie. the pencil as discardable material with a definitive uselessness. I invited the group as they became more obsessed with trying to color my paper, and me allowing one gave them an opportunity to draw with me. I told them to each choose a colored pencil and make a single line per turn. "If your pencil leaves the paper that's your turn." I said. And so slowly and anxiously we built our person. And sometimes people did it out of turn and other times perfectly kindly. Most of the lines are not mine, the four I recall being the head, body, spiky hair and green foot that I had intended to be a tail.
