Coastal towns with rich legacies of industry, technological innovation, and socio-technical infrastructures are in some cases prime locations for offshore wind energy transitions. However, some of these towns have been labelled as ‘left-behind’ due to the decline of coal mining and other high-carbon energy industries. This results in deep-seated impoverishment and socio-economic devastation for affected areas. This paper reports on research from the coastal town of Blyth, Northumberland in the North East of England. Blyth has a proud industrial heritage that has recently focused on cutting edge research and development of offshore wind technologies, and supply chains, for the UK's net zero energy transition. However, the research finds that to build a just transition co-produced with place-based communities requires new forms of collaboration (capacities) and place making that resonates with their values and assets. Otherwise, place-based interventions for net zero energy futures may be alienating for long-term residents, especially when coupled to forms of economic regeneration that may overlook or exclude marginalised voices. The multi-method approach of this study applies an assemblage theoretical framework that draws on in-depth interviews with community and industrial actors, ethnographic walks, go-alongs, asset mapping, and documentary analysis to highlight ‘possibility spaces’ for justice in a coastal town known for its community solidarity. The paper provides recommendations for how Blyth, and places like it, can enable marginalised community voices to co-produce local just transitions for the town and region, with implications for global justice.

While public debate has largely framed coal in terms of extraction and phase-out, less attention has been paid to its material properties and its role in shaping international supply chains. The 2022 embargo on Russian coal disrupted cross-border supplies, forcing importers and households to rely on new coal from overseas markets. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between June 2022 and September 2023 in the Warmia region of northern Poland, this article examines how the need for specific coal parameters rendered some alternative supply routes viable while excluding others, thereby reshaping the import market. The arrival of unfamiliar coal varieties differing in moisture content, calorific value, grain size and combustion properties required evaluation of the new material and comparison with the old. The article shows how this evaluation extended beyond sites of exchange or practices of storage and use. Through processes of testing and comparison, coal is qualified as a tradable good. This qualification is distributed along supply chains, unfolding across sites of circulation rather than being confined to the product itself. By foregrounding the material differences and the practical work required to accommodate them, the qualification of coal sets in motion the transformation of import supply chains. The paper contributes to research on the materiality of energy and to studies of market qualification by showing how heterogeneity enables circulation, shaping which resource flows and logistics routes are rendered viable under conditions of disruption.

This paper explores the emotional and relational dimensions of place-based sustainability transitions using Nottingham as a key case study, grounded in its efforts to become the first carbon neutral city in the United Kingdom. Drawing on interviews, community workshops and participant observation, it examines how love—manifested through community care, place-based identity and collaborative practice—acts as a powerful yet contradictory force. Love can be a powerful motivator for environmental and social action whilst simultaneously generating inequalities and exclusion that threaten to undermine its transformative potential. The paper argues that for the city's climate strategy (CN28) to succeed, it must move beyond technocratic framings of transition and engage more deeply with the emotional infrastructures that shape how people relate to climate action in place. Love, here, is central to fostering just, inclusive and effective climate futures.

Reclaiming Power and Politics in Aquatic Food Research and Policy' with an orange banner at the top. Fish are an important source of food, livelihood and culture for millions of people worldwide. Yet, policy, research and fisheries management paradigms have not often recognised fish as food. Instead, fish are commonly viewed as a commoditised natural resource for economic development and fishing as a livelihood of last resort. However, in academic research and in some policy and fisheries governance circles, understandings of the importance of fish as food are increasing. This paper explores how understandings of fish as food have evolved in research, policy and governance. It shows that fish are most commonly articulated as food through the framing of food security. Through highlighting research gaps and limitations to securitised approaches to aquatic food systems and fisheries, it argues that a critical power-sensitive research agenda needs to be better engaged with in current ‘fish as food’ debates and discourse. Overall, this paper will review our understanding of the burgeoning push for conceptualising fish as food in policy, research and governance to identify gaps in our understanding and thus potential future areas for research.

Clulow & Tafadzwanashe Mabhaudhi (2026) entitled: 'Evaluating UAV Multispectral Imagery, Machine Learning and Image Analysis Techniques for Mapping Taro and Sweet Potato in a Smallholder Cropland in Swayimane, South Africa' with an orange banner at the top. Accurate mapping of neglected and underutilised crop species (NUS) in complex smallholder fields is critical for enhancing food security, yet it remains a significant challenge due to landscape heterogeneity, spectral similarities between crops and the spatial complexity of strip intercropping systems. This study evaluates the efficacy of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral imagery for mapping taro and sweet potato, addressing the limitations of traditional pixel-based image analysis (PBIA), which often fails in fragmented agricultural landscapes. We quantitatively compare the performance of PBIA and object-based image analysis (OBIA) frameworks using a Gradient Tree Boost (GTB) classifier and determine the optimal input dataset by testing raw spectral bands, vegetation indices (VIs) and their combination. The findings demonstrate the clear superiority of the OBIA–GTB approach: using the combined dataset, OBIA–GTB achieved a mean overall accuracy of 95% ± 3.66%, kappa = 0.9419. In contrast, PBIA-GTB yielded 83% ± 7.10% overall accuracy, with kappa = 0.8016. This study validates a robust, scalable workflow for NUS mapping, concluding that the integration of high-resolution UAV data, OBIA and GTB provides a precise solution for agricultural monitoring in heterogeneous, intercropped smallholder systems.

Coasts, deltas and estuaries have been reshaped for generations by land reclamation projects for the purposes of expanding settlements and agricultural lands as well as protecting coasts. Since the mid-twentieth century, technical progress has allowed for land reclamation to occur at an unprecedented speed and scale. Regardless of the key role that land reclamation has had in the past as well as in more recent coastal urbanisation efforts, the issue has received insufficient attention from human geographers, urban political ecologists and marine social scientists. In this paper, I aim to advance the land reclamation research by suggesting a new conceptual framework that combines concepts and empirical insights from urban political ecology (UPE), anthropology, political geography and political economy. This approach considers the representational, legal and material dimensions of urban coastal mega-projects and helps to identify those who benefit and those who lose due to land reclamation. I conclude that a focus on land reclamation can help to understand that ‘land’ is a fundamental requirement for urbanisation. Land in coastal cities is not ‘out there’; it has to be created. To investigate the making of land requires integrating the often-neglected coastal geomorphologies, marine sites of sediment extraction and understanding how they are discursively shaped and transformed by human interventions on urban coasts into UPE.

This study examined the farming practices employed by smallholder farmers in the Bosomtwe District, Ghana, to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhance carbon sequestration. Analysis of climate data from 1993 to 2023 revealed a significant increase in temperature (p < 0.05), while rainfall patterns remained largely unchanged (p > 0.05). Most farmers reported observing altered weather patterns, linking these changes to human activities and recognising significant adverse effects on their farming methods. Key impacts included water shortages, reduced agricultural output, unstable income, disrupted growing seasons, and increased pest and disease pressures. To address these issues, farmers have adopted various strategies, with crop diversification, mulching, organic farming, proper fertiliser use and crop rotation being the most common. The adoption of these methods is significantly influenced by socio-economic factors, including gender, marital status and land tenure systems. The study emphasises the urgent need to promote climate-resilient farming practices, improve awareness and education, foster socio-economic inclusivity and strengthen supportive policy frameworks. These measures are crucial to help smallholder farmers in the Bosomtwe District better combat climate change and improve agricultural sustainability.

The influence of exclusionary narratives on conservation practice is often concealed by a veneer of scientific objectivity and apoliticism. Nonetheless, conservation practitioners often rely on such narratives to carry out their work, often reproducing wilderness discourses and contributing to their long-term embeddedness in conservation practice. Understanding the narratives that shape conservation practitioners' work, therefore, can facilitate an understanding of the role these actors have in maintaining or challenging exclusionary conservation approaches. In this article, I critically analyse conservation practitioners' personal narratives to understand if and how their work is still shaped by exclusionary wilderness discourses. Based on the case of the Manu National Park, regarded as the crown gem of Peruvian conservation, and from my experience having worked for conservation organisations in this protected area, I examine archival material and online interviews with conservation practitioners. My analysis shows that conservation practitioners' narratives often emphasise their own heroism and the supposed progress generated by conservation interventions, while erasing Indigenous people or framing them as an environmental threat. Occasional exceptions to these self-serving narratives bring some hope for change but still fail to question conservation at a fundamental level. This illustrates the need for conservation practitioners to engage in processes of reflexivity where they deliberately seek to de-centre themselves from their own narratives and acknowledge the valuable role that Indigenous communities continue to have.

Discussing Sacrifice Zones and (Green) Colonialism in Political Ecology' with an orange banner at the top. Green colonialism and sacrifice areas are now popular academic topics. Demonstrating affinity between ideas of sacrifice zones, extractivism and green colonialism, this article argues that the state remains foundational to (neo)colonialism, orchestrating extractivism and sacrifice areas—‘green’ or otherwise. Rooting the idea of sacrifice areas with the American Indian Movement (AIM) leader, Russell Means, this idea to ‘love the state but hate colonialism’ within the academy not only ignores the political and material structures of the state but also divorces itself from wider autonomous and anarchist struggles. Reviewing definitions of extractivism, green colonialism, climate coloniality and territorialisation, this article identifies reoccurring features and omissions across similar terminologies. This article also highlights the shortcoming of implicitly embracing statism within political ecology and geography. Statism, the article contends, is not only the root of colonialism(s) but also connects politically, materially and ideologically to extractivism and its sacrifice zones. Advocating engagement with ecological anarchists and autonomous Indigenous theories to confront statism, the article recognises at least four political consequences by academics emphasising the ‘colonial’ over the ‘state’.

This study aims to analyse the factors associated with the inability to keep home adequately warm during winter between migrants from eastern Europe and Russia living in Portugal and to compare these factors with the Portuguese population. It combines primary data collected through an online questionnaire to migrants living in Portugal (n = 781) and secondary data from the survey on Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) microdata; both datasets were collected in 2024. Single and multiple logistic regression models were applied. The results show the multifaceted nature of energy poverty and thermal discomfort in Portugal, specifically among Eastern European and Russian migrants living in Portugal. Individual, social and behavioural factors are significant factors associated with the inability to keep the house warm during winter. Migrant respondents report significantly higher levels of indoor thermal discomfort despite accessing housing with similar characteristics. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive strategies focusing on improving housing conditions, providing targeted economic support and designing policies able to address the needs of vulnerable communities.

Maps have long been used to deal with menacing waters, to make them comprehensible and governable. Cartography and governing water are both deeply entangled in modernist rationalities and modes of control. This paper takes as its starting point the floods that have affected southern Brazil in recent years and the scientific and journalistic maps that have emerged around them. Following hydrofeminist and political ecology debates, it argues for a hydrocartographic approach in relation to the examination of social water relations that affect both the way we understand cartography and the mapping of waters. It aims to rethink relationships with the more-than-human water bodies we inhabit, precisely in the light of the threats they pose. The paper draws on years of collaborative research with the indigenous communities in the southern Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and their relations to water. While colonial water politics continue to threaten the Ibirama-Laklãnõ indigenous land, the affected Xokleng communities have endorsed a movement for territorial reappropriation that also connects to ancestral relationships to the territory's waters. Building on our mapping experience with this movement, we propose hydrocartography as a dual shift: watering cartography and mapping bodies of water.

This paper tracks the recent performative (re)scaling that state officials in the Republic of Seychelles, an archipelagic state in the Western Indian Ocean, have been articulating with the early adoption of a novel ocean-focused development paradigm—namely, the Blue Economy. In doing so, it articulates the diverse practices these actors have mobilised to enact environmental governance so that Seychelles could turn from being a ‘small island state’ to a ‘big ocean state’—practices that offer a glimpse into the geopolitical improvisations of environmental state making at the margins. Based on 12-month fieldwork in the country, the paper empirically maps how Seychellois state officials have repurposed some of the definitional features that debt restructuring-based Blue Economy projects now exhibit globally—exemplified by moving from Marine Protected Areas to a Marine Spatial Plan, the definition of a 30% protection target in deep waters, or the scripting of their own oceanic vocabulary—to shift the narrative from being a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) towards a Big Ocean State (BOS[S]). Ultimately, the improvised (ocean) state emerging from this account serves to historically situate the comings-together of an expanding debt-fuelled Blue Economy, while articulating novel geopolitical terrains where power asymmetries are jostled, subjectivities and spaces are performatively brought into being, and environmental state-making is tentatively (re)produced.

Alternative food networks and vegetarianism in the city of Buenos Aires' with an orange banner at the top. This article aims to advance on a little-known topic, the relationship between participation in alternative food supply networks (AFN) and the vegetarian condition of consumers in the city of Buenos Aires. To this end, we conducted an exploratory study analysing the features and practices of the clients who join these networks through qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques (20 semi-structured interviews and a survey of 196 cases). Qualitative analysis highlighted the importance of certain moments of rupture in consumers' biographies, such as the transition to veganism or the reduction of meat consumption. The quantitative phase indicated that vegans and vegetarians represent an important group of customers in alternative food networks. Compared to other consumers, they show a greater interest in the systemic aspects of the food system. Likewise, the incidence of their refusal to buy food in supermarkets, their frequent purchase of agroecological and organic food and a high proportion of expenditure in them points to their greater degree of politicisation. These findings allow us to reflect on the implications of the convergence of AFN and plant-based diets for the sustainability of the food system.

Maps are an essential tool to inform fire governance and management. For instance, they can highlight which areas are most vulnerable to adverse fire impacts or be used to plan interventions for risk reduction and prevention. In recent years, several studies have mapped the fire management activities and the networks between the multitude of involved actors. They build upon previous advances to combine quantitative and qualitative social network analysis with geographical analysis and cartography, aiming to highlight areas of opportunity to enhance fire governance. This paper continues this line of research, examining cooperation in fire management within the south-eastern part of the state of Chiapas. This area is the main fire risk area in Southern Mexico, characterised by the involvement of many different fire management actors. The paper proposes two advances to better visualise the networks between these actors—integration with modularity clustering and a thematic map integrating different spatial scales—and discusses the implications of these fire network maps for governance. The paper's main results are, first, the confirmation of the considerable influence of spatial distance and aspects of human and physical geography on network formation. Second, it shows the capacity of mapping to inform regional fire management arrangements.

Sazzad Hossain, Saida Islam Sejuti & Murad Ahmed Farukh (2026) entitled: 'Transforming the Floodplain: Agricultural Encroachment and Landscape Change in the Northwestern Ganges-Padma Basin' with an orange banner at the top. The Ganges-Padma floodplain of Bangladesh is a highly productive agricultural region critical to national food security and rural livelihoods. Over the past three decades, this fertile landscape has experienced significant land use and land cover (LULC) changes, particularly the expansion of agricultural land. This study analyses the spatial and temporal dynamics of such changes across six floodplain districts, namely Kushtia, Pabna, Rajbari, Chapai Nawabganj, Natore and Rajshahi from 1990 to 2023. Using Landsat imagery and a Random Forest classifier in Google Earth Engine, LULC maps were generated for five time points, achieving overall accuracies of 93%–99% and Cohen's kappa of 0.91–0.99. Findings reveal a net agricultural land gain of 771.70 km2, primarily at the expense of water bodies (−634.23 km2) and vegetation cover (−224.71 km2). Change detection and transition-flow analyses show that wetlands and vegetated areas were the main sources of new cropland, driven by population growth, rising food demand and supportive agricultural policies. Built-up areas also expanded, though to a lesser extent. While agricultural growth supports food production, it has contributed to wetland degradation, biodiversity loss and heightened climate vulnerability. These trends underscore the urgent need for integrated land management strategies that balance agricultural expansion with ecological sustainability. The study offers critical insights for policymakers and planners aiming to promote sustainable land use in deltaic and floodplain regions.

The achievement of the UK government's national climate targets is dependent on sub-national activity. The distribution of responsibility across governance actors at multiple scales has resulted in the development of different climate change strategies. Increasingly, these strategies draw upon a place-based approach, as this supports the development of strategies that better capture local contexts. Yet, when developing place-based strategies, there is the need for early, meaningful and ongoing engagement with a diverse and extensive range of publics to fully capture local contexts. Drawing upon insights obtained through workshops conducted with local publics in Cambridge, UK, this paper unpacks tensions between publics and governance actors in relation to Cambridge City Council's 2021–2026 Climate Change Strategy. Utilising a relational place-based framing, the paper discusses: (1) the misalignment between the strategy and the priorities of publics; (2) the perceived disjuncture in how the strategy is being implemented; and (3) approaches for addressing the tensions identified. The paper closes with empirically informed recommendations for developing local climate strategies, which are of relevance for any context whereby (local) strategies are being developed and implemented.

With the urgent need to address climate change, it is critical to confront fossil fuel dependency, particularly in the Global North. This requires confronting the spatio-cultural dimensions of fossil fuels, including how they have become embedded in those locations most closely tied to the fossil fuel industry. This article integrates insights from energy geographies with Hein's concept of petroleumscape to unpack how oil is embedded in Stavanger, Norway's oil capital. This article argues that attention must be paid to local petroleumscapes in order to better unpack how fossil fuel dependency becomes spatially embedded in locally differentiated ways, while simultaneously reinforcing a global petroleumscape. Through qualitative participatory mapping, the article visualises perceived spatialities of petroleum by Stavanger's citizens. Empirically, the article finds that although petroleum is seen as at once hyper-visible and obscured, the city is characterised by a petro-omnipresence. Furthermore, the article finds that petroleum produces a particular social space through the funding of public goods, while also producing social inequalities that are experienced spatially through unequal housing patterns and leisure activities. These insights contribute to uncovering the obscured, yet all-encompassing influences of petroleum on social–ecological spaces in a highly oil-dependent and oil-producing region.

This paper aims to step back from such rhetoric in order to examine its implications. Through considering four types of ‘fatigue’, it asks whether or not transformation and justice approaches for climate change responses account for on-the-ground circumstances of Pacific Islands and Islanders. Possible consequences of the language of transformation and justice are then explored. Critique can lead to responses which suggest how identified difficulties could be overcome through the Pacific approach of talanoa. Conclusions indicate how talanoa can assist in avoiding external impositions without bypassing what non-Pacific approaches offer the Pacific—and especially vice versa.

While playful methods are increasingly used in participatory mapping processes, their strategic value, particularly in relation to climate adaptation, remains underexamined. This paper explores the potential and limitations of playful mapping approaches in climate adaptation, focusing on two qualitative case studies in Jakarta's flood-prone Kampung Akuarium: memory mapping with children and speculative gameplay with residents and government officials. Both approaches are examined in terms of their methodological strengths and weaknesses as well as their impact and scalability. The findings show that playful and participatory mapping tools open spaces for storytelling, imagination and collective reflection. They make visible immaterial cultural heritage and emotional aspects often excluded from technocratic planning, allowing participants to articulate the cultural dimensions of urban transformation. Yet, these insights often remain symbolic without pathways for institutional uptake. The paper argues that the context-specific potentials and the downsides of playful methods need to be evaluated carefully. Where their contribution to adaptation processes outweighs their resource-intensiveness, they should be treated not only as experiential formats but as strategic instruments embedded in long-term, co-creative research infrastructures.

The rapid expansion of urban areas and their significant effects on carbon emissions and the urban heat landscape have become major research subjects in Bangladesh. The primary aim of this study was to analyse the changes in land use and land cover (LULC) and land surface temperature (LST) from 2003 to 2023 and project them to 2043 for Gazipur, Bangladesh. Additionally, spatiotemporal variations in carbon emissions during summer and winter and their relationships with the LST were explored. A support vector machine (SVM) was used to evaluate changes in LULC. Furthermore, Cellular Automata-Artificial Neural Network (CA-ANN) models were utilised to investigate the future dynamics of LST and LULC. The findings of the study include urban expansion from 3% in 2003 to 18% in 2023, and its projected value indicates an expansion of 315 km2 in 2043 from 52 km2 in 2003. Therefore, the projected LST results indicate a notable increase of 10°C for the winter season in 2043. The correlation between LST and carbon emissions showed strong R2 values for both summer and winter. Specifically, the R2 values were 0.93 and 0.97 for summer and 0.91 and 0.94 for winter in 2013 and 2019, respectively. This investigation has the potential to offer novel insights into prospective urban development, effective management of thermal environments and strategies for mitigating carbon emissions.

This study critically examines the limitations of satellite remote sensing (SRS) in capturing the complexities of human–fire interactions. It proposes a relational approach grounded in the embodied, place-based knowledge of communities living with fire. Conventional SRS reduces fire to pixels, providing a synoptic yet partial view of fire regimes. Fire governance shaped by these representations often marginalises local practices, knowledge, and priorities. Drawing on relational theory and critical remote sensing scholarship, we introduce ‘adding lines along pixels’, an approach that reworks the use of SRS through a situated, community-centred perspective. Here, lines denote the dynamic relations among fire, people, landscapes, and institutions, which pixel-based methods overlook. Our case studies in Ethiopia and India used satellite data alongside ethnographic and participatory approaches to explore not only where and when fires occur, but also why they emerge and how they are embedded in seasonal rhythms, livelihood practices and local governance. This approach challenges the prevailing narratives that marginalise local fire use and underscores the need to engage with diverse knowledge systems for more inclusive and effective fire management. As fire governance is reshaped by climate change and digital technologies, such critical engagements are essential for co-producing sustainable fire futures.

In Bangladesh's delta, rural communities have long held lives inseparable from seasonal flooding, adapting their homes and livelihoods to the annual monsoon. However, land subsidence, changing seasons, severe storms, increased salinity, and rising sea levels are threatening local livelihoods. The objective of this paper is to understand rural residents' perceptions of climate impacts and adaptation measures, focusing on their mobility choices. Through 15 qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 22 representatives from two embanked polder localities in southwest Bangladesh, we explored the following questions: (i) How do local residents perceive recent climate and environmental changes? (ii) How are local residents coping with these changes and what external assistance do they require to maintain their livelihoods; and (iii) How do local residents perceive migration or partial migration as a potential adaptation strategy? While these communities report an increased frequency of extreme climate events and severe flooding, our findings also reveal a lack of external assistance for adaptation solutions. Moreover, most families are either unwilling or unable to completely migrate out of affected areas. Therefore, increased support—the provision of fresh drinking water, money to recoup lost income and assistance rebuilding or reinforcing homes—is essential for building adaptive capacity and increasing local resilience in the face of climate shocks.

The planet is facing enduring and intersecting challenges from climate change, land degradation, habitat and biodiversity loss, as well as social inequalities. To achieve sustainability in the face of these crises, transformative changes are essential. While the path towards a more sustainable future has the capacity to bring net social benefits, it also holds the potential to exacerbate vulnerabilities. As such, there is growing recognition that social equity and justice must be central to action for sustainability transformations. However, it remains unclear what characterises a ‘just transformation’ and how to achieve it. To develop a baseline understanding of how social justice is integrated into sustainability transformations and to help guide research and practice in this emerging field, we present a systematic literature review of 125 papers that explicitly account for social equity and justice in research on place-based transformations. Results reveal considerable variation and ambiguity in how the concepts of transformation and equity are employed, and highlight a focus on a narrow set of systems, with a large number of papers focusing on energy and urban transformations, located primarily in the Global North. While distributional and procedural dimensions of justice are frequently addressed, contextual and restorative justice remain underexplored. We identify key areas that require future attention in research and practice, including promoting interdisciplinary research that champions global inclusivity as well as a more explicit consideration of contextual justice and place.

This paper presents a vegetal geography of Chinese rhododendrons at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), examining the mechanisms through which RBGE's scientific authority is established in the field of Rhododendron research and conservation. Building on the geographical conceptualisation of relational plant agency, this paper extends it by illustrating that attending to the rhododendron–people–environment relationship sheds light on the ecological–political nature of the Rhododendron species at RBGE, the broader historical contexts that stimulate the accumulation, and the environmental conditions that encourage the maintenance. Drawing on interviews, observation and document analysis, I illustrate the contribution and labour of the underappreciated Chinese collectors in the historical botanical exploration, discuss rhododendron's ‘plantiness’ and examine RBGE's contemporary activities that aim to accumulate and sustain the ex situ rhododendrons both materially and epistemically. I argue that the scientific authority of RBGE has been shaped by the semi-colonial history of China after the First Opium War ending in 1842, the encounters between British botanists and local collectors, as well as RBGE's intentional accumulation and maintenance of rhododendrons and related knowledge, all of which are mediated by rhododendrons' agency and continue to influence today's conservation dynamics.

This paper explores mechanisms of epistemic violence enacted through the climate finance (access) industry in Vanuatu, shedding light on the colonial inflictions of multilateral green funds in global climate governance. While the climate crisis is a reality in Vanuatu, its access to direct climate finance remains constrained, as it is not an accredited entity to any of the major climate funds. This serves as a gateway for a growing climate finance (access) industry that has established itself across the Pacific and in Vanuatu. Using an action-theoretical perspective that centres acts of doing epistemic violence, this paper identifies four mechanisms of epistemic violence enacted through Vanuatu's climate finance (access) industry: distortion via the mistranslation of realities; imposition via rendering people and regions investable; devaluation via rendering people incapable and exploitation through the extraction of knowledges and exhaustion of resources. Rather than improving access and equity for frontline communities, this paper elaborates that epistemic violence remains the modus operandi of Vanuatu's climate finance (access) industry—and is thus complicit in the perpetration of physical violence in the form of losses and damages, ecocide and epistemicide. Dismantling this system would at least require the islanding of climate finance, emphasising local agency and self-determination over externally imposed, extractive models.

Climate change intensifies existing inequities, disproportionately impacting marginalised populations, particularly in the Global South and Indigenous communities. This is maintained through inequitable global climate governance, policies and solutions. The paper argues that climate coloniality, the complex entanglements of colonial legacies with contemporary climate and ecological changes, operates through systemic knowledge-based marginalisation or epistemic injustice, serving as a key mechanism in the uneven production and distribution of climate harms. Beyond the more commonly discussed material dimensions of loss and damage, epistemic injustices arise from silencing critical voices and devaluing knowledge systems. The paper extends the scope of loss and damage debates by drawing attention to epistemic losses: the erasure of worldviews, ontologies and practices that are vital for just and sustainable climate futures. It critically examines the intersections of power, pedagogy and praxis in (re)producing epistemic injustices, while simultaneously revealing counter-narratives of refusal, resurgence and relationality. By engaging Indigenous and Global South scholarship, the paper underscores the need to decolonise knowledge systems that reproduce dominant climate narratives and heed the epistemological alternatives offered by land- and kinship-based knowledge systems. Advancing climate justice depends on confronting epistemic injustice as both a form of loss and a condition of possibility: centring Global South and Indigenous perspectives is essential for cultivating pluriversal, decolonial and just climate frameworks and futures.

In this paper, we introduce the concept of safewashing within the context of the hazardous aesthetic and the attractive view as a new lens through which to research issues relating to widespread, continuing urban property development in unsafe, hazard-prone locations. Recognising that many aesthetically attractive views can be simultaneously hazardous, we suggest that in the process of property development and marketing, unsafe locations may be masked through ‘washing out’ (i.e. overlooking or covering up) actual and/or potential risk in favour of driving urban growth, capital investment and profit. Underpinned by the concept of aesthetic common sense, we explore the commodification of the aesthetically appealing view and the safewashing of the reality of hazard and potential disaster. Questions are raised about how the practice of safewashing within the context of increasing human impacts and the financial costs of disasters may be challenged and addressed.

This article analyses the impact of the war in Ukraine on air quality and heating practices in Polish cities. In this case, it does not focus on the direct impact of military activities, but on various social and political decisions, as well as changes in social behaviour undertaken under the influence of the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. The authors defend the thesis that it is worth analysing air quality and heating practices in local communities not only in the context of local and national policies but also by referring to global and transnational factors. Based on focus group interviews with the residents of Wrocław, they prove that global events may have an impact on local air quality and apartment heating methods and be a catalyst for processes in various spheres of local and national public life: legal–political, economic, environmental–spatial, health and socio-practical. The article proposes a glocalisation perspective as an approach that can integrate local social and environmental conditions with global ecological challenges, while also highlighting the impact of global factors—economic, political, energy-related and military—on local trends, behaviours and policies in the context of environmental protection.

As climate change makes the future of urban living appear increasingly daunting, many people and communities are already experiencing climate impacts. This paper highlights the disproportionate nature of climate change, from unequal historical responsibilities to unequal climate impacts that fall on the most vulnerable and unequal prospects that hinder people and countries from adapting to a changing climate now and in the future. Through an arts-based literature review, the paper demonstrates that climate change's effects and responses often reinforce existing inequalities, systematically pushing people, communities and entire countries into further vulnerability. Acknowledging that spatial processes play a critical role in creating, shaping and perpetuating inequalities and oppression, we advocate for spatial justice in climate action and offer eight principles to support spatial scholars and practitioners in adopting a critical perspective on climate change in urban contexts.

However, a measurable method for integrating these perspectives remains undeveloped. This study aims to assess the knowledge and opinions of spatially diverse stakeholders regarding the policy initiatives in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) from 2009 to 2021, focusing on the catchments with the misalignment between basin conditions and policy across environmental, economic and cultural dimensions. The analysis identifies significant misalignments in the Lower Murray, Barwon–Darling–Lower Darling, Gwydir and Murrumbidgee catchments, where economic priorities dominate basin conditions while environmental concerns are emphasised in policy development. Environmental advocacy and academic groups are the main drivers of reform, while agricultural stakeholders, Catchment Management Authorities and Indigenous groups present obstacles to progress. These groups require more focused engagement to facilitate governance shifts. The findings underscore the need for targeted consultation to better align policy and basin conditions.

Rob MacKenzie & Yueming Shi (2025) entitled: "‘Quiet’ green community innovations at the interface of public and private ownership in an old neighbourhood in Zhengzhou, China" This paper examines informal urban gardening practices within a 70-year-old industrial neighbourhood in Zhengzhou, central China, employing the conceptual framework of ‘annexed common space for private green infrastructure’ (ACS-PGI). Through urban morphological and typological analysis, it interrogates how historical institutional legacies, urban land tenure regimes, local governance structures, socio-spatial configurations and cultural-agricultural traditions collectively inform and sustain these grassroots greening practices. Adopting a structural attribution system framework, the study advances a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted structural determinants underpinning informal gardening. Departing from Western-centric interpretations that often frame such practices as acts of political contestation, the Zhengzhou case elucidates a historically embedded, socially legitimised and spatially articulated phenomenon rooted in collective memory, communal land-use rights and tacit state tolerance. This research contributes to urban socio-environmental scholarship by underscoring the necessity of situating informal urban greening within its distinct institutional and cultural-historical context, thereby offering critical insights for the theorisation of sustainable urban green infrastructure and community agency.

Growing energy and material throughput, climate change targets and political economic evolution have spurred rapid deployment of lower-carbon energy infrastructures. Many of these developments have relied on ‘cheap nature’, often covering agropastoral and indigenous lands, which raises questions about the implications of energy transitions for non-industrial lifeways. This article explores the onto-epistemological foundations that comprise the emergent energy transitions paradigm. Anchored in ethnographic findings from fieldwork in Rajasthan (India), we identify naturalism as the dominant ontological basis of knowledge production in global energy policies and examine its imaginaries and practices. We draw on Philippe Descola's ontological modes of identification to question universalism and demonstrate its perpetuation through energy transition practices. These approaches overlook socioecological complexity, a gap starkly showcased by the solar energy rollout in agropastoral Rajasthan, with Jaisalmer district as its epicentre. To overcome these limitations, we propose and empirically test the Situated Energy Ecologies principles, which combine (a) a post-productivist approach based on a commitment to energy sufficiency; (b) a commitment to ontological and epistemic recognition, to better capture place-based ways of knowing and being; and (c) autonomous practices based on prefigurative politics and agonism. By integrating a wider array of human experiences, this tripartite heuristic fosters a pluralistic understanding of energy-society relations towards emancipatory engagement.

High magnitude storms have impacted coastal maritime communities, instigating national government responses. Storm catastrophes can open a ‘window of opportunity’ that enables the implementation of new long-term disaster risk reduction measures. Analysis of historical storm events using written newspaper records identified the Royal Charter storm of 1859 as a catastrophe that opened a window of opportunity. The resulting actions prompted the first national (UK) storm early warning systems which continue today as the Meteorological Office forecasts. This historical case study demonstrates how the effective use of the window of opportunity can instigate beneficial long-term change that decreases vulnerability. However, policies emerging from such windows of opportunity must consider the diverse cause of catastrophe and avoid overreliance on top-down technocracy, instead promoting community engagement and autonomy for sustained success. Environmental history can contribute to improving the understanding of the limitations of technocracy and the importance of community agency in enhancing hazard understanding and effective early warning systems.

We welcome new, critical, and underrepresented ideas from leading scholars and emerging voices in pursuit of fresh viewpoints and solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. We welcome papers in a range of formats - regular papers, dialogues, commentaries, visual essays, reviews - that engage with environmental issues from a geographical perspective. Papers in Geo can also foster methodological development including collaborative forms of knowledge production, interdisciplinary approaches, and the innovative use of quantitative and/or qualitative data sets. We are especially encouraging of submissions by authors from the Global South and underrepresented academic communities within the Global North. As a fully open access journal, Geo is proud of its broad geographical reach in both authorship and readership.

Each theme is managed by an advisory team of leading academics who develop, curate, and invite a range of contributions and conversations. Each theme is open for submissions — you can connect your submission with a theme on the ScholarOne submission system.
