Alaska Earthquake Center Although no one was in Tracy Arm (thankfully!) when the landslide crashed into the water on Sunday, we are now starting to get some images of just how large that event was. These before-and-after satellite images show places where the tsunami scoured the fjord walls down to bedrock. (The locations of the different insets can be found in the main image by the differently colored boxes.) The first image uses the visible spectrum, like a normal photograph. The second image shows Near Infrared, which highlights vegetation, so that the newly-bare rock is more evident. Note the run-up of the tsunami indicated by new bare rock on the opposing fjord wall. That speck on Sawyer Island in the after images is a lone tree that survived the tsunami! Thank you to Planet for the data and Simon Plank, DLR for sharing these images.

Transcribed Text: Alaska Earthquake Center We received reports this morning from the Endicott Arm area of Southeast Alaska of a local tsunami that rolled through the area just after 5:30 AM. Seismic signals large enough to be seen widely across southern Alaska confirm a significant landslide in the region at about the same time. We are working with other agencies and colleagues to understand the full sequence of events, but at this point, all evidence suggests that this set of 1-foot high waves was set in motion by a landslide of several tens of millions of cubic meters of rock striking the water. Last week's Sand Point Earthquake is part of a series that kicked off exactly 5 years ago. Each large earthquake in this sequence has produced a lot of aftershocks, shown in the first image below. The July 16, M7.3 event is no exception -- almost 2,000 aftershocks in less than a week! Most of these are not felt, but help scientists understand how stress is being released along a previously quiet part of the Alaska-Aleutian subduction system. (Top) This seismogram from station CHN shows the “aftershock decay,” or decrease in aftershocks, following the July 16, 2025 M7.3 Sand Point Earthquake mainshock. Each line represents 20 minutes of data recording. At first, the aftershocks appear almost continuous (red line following the mainshock)—in the first 30 minutes, there was an M3+ aftershock roughly every 30 seconds. Gradually the aftershocks become more spread apart on the seismogram, although still only by minutes. Larger aftershocks are sprinkled throughout, with the large spikes of several M5+ aftershocks visible in the middle of the image. Aftershocks can continue for years after a large earthquake. For example, we are still recording aftershocks from the 2020 M7.8 Simeonof Earthquake (Bottom) This magnitude-time graph represents the magnitudes of the aftershocks following the July 16, 2025 M7.3 Sand Point Earthquake over time. The four M5+ aftershocks are visible. The smaller aftershocks are initially tightly clustered and overlapping, but start to spread out in time in the hours following the earthquake.

In this video, Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) scientists Tyler Paladino and Alex Iezzi and Mount Rainier National Park Geologist Scott Beason provide an update on the earthquake swarm at Mount Rainier. Since the swarm began on July 8 there have been over 700 located events and hundreds of additional earthquakes too small to be located. While earthquake rates have decreased significantly from over 30 events per hour to the present 1–2 events per hour, low-level seismicity has persisted at a steady rate for the past few days. CVO and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) will continue to monitor the activity and provide updates via social media, the CVO website, the PNSN website, and the Volcano Notification Service. We are grateful to those who shared their experiences -- it allows others to understand what an earthquake is like, and be better prepared. We are also grateful that we have not heard of anyone injured from this fairly large earthquake for Alaska.

The Cascades Volcano Observatory and Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington detected an earthquake swarm at Mount Rainier, Washington, starting at 1:29 a.m. PDT on July 8. Thus far there have been several hundred small events, the largest reaching M1.7, with located earthquakes at depths of 1.2–3.7 miles (2–6 km). The attached map shows the current swarm in orange, with all earthquakes located since 2020 in blue. GPS stations around the volcano have not recorded any changes in ground deformation. Earthquake swarms are relatively common at Mount Rainier, typically occurring 1–2 times per year but usually with many fewer events than have been detected so far during the current swarm. The last large swarm at Mount Rainier occurred in 2009, when many hundreds of earthquakes (maximum=M2.3) occurred over a 3-day span. Earthquake swarms like this have been attributed to circulation of hydrothermal fluids that are interacting with preexisting faults at shallow levels below the summit of the volcano. Mount Rainier is well monitored by a dense network of seismic, infrasound, GPS, and webcam stations. No other changes are apparent at the volcano at this time. CVO and Pacific Northwest Seismic Network will continue to monitor activity and issue additional notices as warranted.
