It's called a funny bone for two reasons: a pun on the upper arm bone (the humerus) and the peculiar, tingly sensation you feel when it is struck. You aren't actually hitting a bone, but rather your ulnar nerve. This nerve runs from your neck down to your fingers and is unprotected by muscle or fat at the elbow. When bumped against the humerus bone, it creates that famously "funny" (odd or tingling) feeling. •
