I received complaints that people couldn't really feel like it was an autocomplete unless I used custom styling for the options (and also handled all keyboard events).

It wouldn’t be a stretch to allow for a custom datalist in a future version. Maybe a configurable option that enables you to use the custom datalist in mobile only or all the time. If you want to file an enhancement request, I’ll ruminate on it.
