WHY "HIGH-FUNCTIONING" IS BEING RETIRED "High-functioning was meant to describe someone who could "pass" as neurotypical. But it was never about how much someone struggles; it was about how well they hid it. That's why autistic and ADHD advocates are moving away from it It hides real struggle. Someone labeled 'high-functioning' can still be having a panic attack in a bathroom stall, going nonverbal after work, or spending every evening recovering from the effort of the day. The label just means the struggle wasn't visible to whoever was looking. It ranks people against each other. "High" implies a "Low" and both labels tend to erase what the person actually needs. someone can be "High-functining" at work and unable to cook dinner. Functining isn't one score; it moves depending on the day, the task, and the support around them. It can mean support gets withheld. Kids and adults labeled "High-functining" are often told they're "too capable" to qualify for accommodations even when they're barely holding it together. The label can end up costing people the help they actually need. What to say instead: Try describing the actual support needs. "Needs support with executive functining" or "Experiences high support needs in social settings." Or focus on the specific trait: "Masks well in public, struggles more at home." And when you combine ALL these stories and add it to his hiring of Alex Acosta, the birthday card, the innuendo Trump wrote on the card, the movement of Maxwell to a more lenient facility, and then - especially - his persistently panicked behavior on all things Epstein, it really should be the end of his presidency
