Do not expect that others read your body or sign language correctly. In my case I explicitly told my boss that I want to be tenured - despite it felt highly awkward and is not my usual me. He was deeply impressed (he told me later) by this clarity, because it is atypical for women.

Location: Research Institute for Sustainability at GFZ (RIFS), Berliner Straße 130, 14467 Potsdam. Text: With this pilot event we wish to provide an exchange platform for STEM researchers and scholars researching Chinese society, politics or culture (China scholars) in the Berlin-Potsdam area. The goal is to let the two groups share knowledge, experiences and ideas. If you as a STEM researcher have questions on Chinese society, politics or culture, or wish to add China-related social sciences aspects into your work (maybe a future proposal), this is the event for you. Likewise, if you are a China scholar and wish to learn more about science in contemporary China, could imagine to support a STEM team, or maybe even design research on scientific knowledge production, come and find your partners.

Ein glücklicher Zufall bescherte uns dieses Foto. Durch die Kamera erscheinen die Polarlichter noch intensiver. Das seltene Naturschauspiel hängt eng mit unserer Forschung in den Sektionen „Geomagnetismus“ und „Weltraumphysik und Weltraumwetter“ zusammen. Polarlichter entstehen, wenn Teilchen des Sonnenwinds mit Atomen und Molekülen in der Atmosphäre zusammenstoßen und sie zum Leuchten anregen. Normalerweise treten sie in Ovalen von rund 3.000 bis 4.000 km Durchmesser um die Pole auf. Das ist in Europa in Nordskandinavien der Fall. Nur selten – bei sehr starker Sonnenaktivität – erreichen sie niedrigere Breiten wie hier bei Bamberg am 10. Mai 2024 um 23 Uhr. Denn das im Erdkern erzeugte Erdmagnetfeld bildet einen sehr effektiven Schutzschild um die Erde: die Magnetosphäre. So schön das Leuchten ist: Für unsere hochtechnisierte, von Satelliten abhängige Gesellschaft können die geladenen Teilchen und elektromagnetischen Felder des Sonnenwindes auch zerstörerische Auswirkungen haben. Satelliten können beschädigt werden, GPS-Systeme den Dienst versagen. Selbst unsere Stromnetze können betroffen sein, wenn uns ein besonders starker geomagnetischer Sturm erreicht. Ein genaues Verständnis der Magnetosphäre und Grundlagenforschung für zuverlässigere Weltraumwetter-Vorhersagen sind daher unerlässlich. Foto: Monika Korte
