Yumi's head still rested against the cool brick wall. She moaned and half heartedly flipped him off while keeping her eyes on her own shoes. They waved beneath her, swimming in her vision even though she remained still. "I didn't vomit on your shoes. That was back splash. You shouldn't have been standing where I was trying to throw up." "You shouldn't have drank three times your body weight." "*You* shouldn't have offered to pay." She heard a breath of a laugh, then he dropped the butt of his cigarette and crushed it underneath his heel. The spark of the remaining ember caught her attention as it fell past, and she focused on it as though she were watching a star fall from the alley sky. *Pretty*. An absurd thought, but it stuck in her and echoed off her inebriated skull.

His bones are shaking. Thatā€™s what heā€™d have told his mother on nights like this. ā€œMama, my bones are shaking.ā€ There were no other words for what he felt, none that made sense, and his mother would just hush him and look at him with a frustration that crawled along his bones whether he liked it or not. Sheā€™d been dead for years now, and by the time he had gone to stay with relatives he knew better than to talk about how his bones hurt when the moon was full. Fat raindrops had started to fall from the sky and the doorway he say in barely provided enough coverage to protect his face from it. His legs, folded with his arms wrapped around them, werenā€™t as lucky but he didnā€™t care. He was too hungry to move, even if the downpour had morphed the smell of garbage into something grimy that awakened in the cobblestone. There was an awning over the door across the alleyway, green and recently cleaned or maybe brand-new. The light to the side of the door snapped on and the door creaked open, pushing away a trash bag that had rolled over and and been torn open by rats. The boy watched as someone stepped through, cigarette hanging from his lips as he looked backward into the kitchen he had walked out of. The scent of roasting vegetables hit the boyā€™s stomach as the man said something insulting with a grin on his face, closing the door and leaning against it before taking his lighter out of his stripped apron and bracing it against the wind to light his cigarette. Then he looked up. The boy hadnā€™t moved, arms still crossed on his knees and getting pelted with water. The man took a long drag and blew the smoke away from the boy, but kept his eye on him, cataloguing him in a way that made him feel uncomfortable enough to shuffle backwards on the step he sat on.

In their youth, Shin had spent the majority of his time reading through every book or scroll he could get his hands on. This included every treatise, founding law, and amendment to Venathcaā€™s long register of laws and provisions. He closed his eyes and tilted his head to the side with an amount of restraint he felt he should be praised for. ā€œWhat are you doing?ā€ Ikuto asked, his voice lifting in amusement. ā€œTrying to remember if thereā€™s any legal precedence for throwing a Venathican prince off of a cliff in a fit of rage that didnā€™t end in execution for treason.ā€ The guard to Keianā€™s side gasped, but Ikuto didnā€™t flinch. ā€œThereā€™s precedence that *did* end in execution?ā€ ā€œYes.ā€ ā€œLucky me.ā€
