Scanned book pages from a chapter titled “SUMMON THE DEMONS” (page 126). The excerpt describes John Carmack deciding to give up his cat, Mitzi, after the cat repeatedly caused problems around his apartment, including damaging a new leather couch. Carmack tells coworkers he took Mitzi to an animal shelter because the cat was having a negative impact on his life. A coworker reacts with concern that the cat may be euthanized. The passage concludes by explaining Carmack’s pragmatic attitude toward problems: if something becomes an obstacle, it should be removed or let go, whether it is a cat, a computer program, or even a person.
