Leadbeater's Possum Rediscovery Close to this location, Eric Wilkinson rediscovered the Leadbeater's Possum on 3rd April 1961, after the species had been considered extinct for more than fifty years. "I could hardly believe what I was seeing. This little grey possum had a thin, club-shaped black tail, bushing out towards the tip, and I could see that there was no gliding membrane. There was an almost instantaneous recognition that I was looking at the long lost Leadbeater's Possum!
