remember years ago when Game Maker Studio 2 updated, breaking how global variables work and still haven't fixed it to this day?
You used to be able to have a 'god' object that would keep track of everything (player health, score etc) but now you have to declare the global variables over and over on all the objects that need them (like the player, coins).
If you need to re declare it every time, it isn't bloody GLOBAL is it?

**Okay I just looked it up and you still can set proper global variables, it's just harder then it used to**

Castlevania (1986)

What hasn't been said about the original Castlevania?

well very little, but I will have a crack at it anyway

Just before we start I would like to preface this retro game talk by saying I haven't actually beaten this game, I got to the death fight without the much needed holy water and even with save states I couldn't win so unfortunately I gave up (after about a million attempts)

Now that I have stated my completion status of the game, I think it is time to talk about the game itself.

Castlevania was released on the NES and well you can tell it was, while it looks great and the music is memorable there are little things that can slow or in some cases ruin the experience biggest thing being possibly the in air jump game controls

Obviously I am not going to rip into a game from 1986 for not having perfect controls but I will say that the inability to move in the air after a still jump in a platforming game did, on a few occasions, make me want to stop playing, yes I am aware that for most of the platforming you will be moving so this issue won't come up much but it was the most annoying thing about my played time so I had to mention it.

As I said earlier the game looks great for the NES even when compared to Super Mario Bros that came out a year before, as I played I could recognise what every sprite was or represented and while visual atmosphere can be quite difficult to do on the NES I would say Castlevania does achieve a spooky atmosphere using its graphics and music.

Speaking of the games music, it sounds great, in fact I have had the soundtrack playing while I write this. On my day to day music listening I would prefer modern versions of the music, but if the 1986 soundtrack was all I had, I would be very happy.

Side Pocket (1993) (SNES)

When it comes to sports, none are as simple as pool, while rules and different standards do exist, most variations just boil down to potting balls into pockets.

Side Pocket is weird, not as a pool game but the physics inside, if that makes sense? before i get to talking about the controls, graphics or music I really need to mention ball direction, while playing I kept feeling like the balls could move in only 8 directions, the balls don’t but i swear that sometimes the balls are railroaded into the 8 directions but maybe that’s just me or maybe my steam deck emulated the game wrong, who knows.

Anyway enough about the ball physics it’s time to mention graphics which are…fine, just imagine a pool table on the SNES, yes the graphics look nice and are detailed but pool on the SNES all look the same, just look up ‘Championship Pool’ and ‘Side Pocket’ and compare the images that come up, I will admit they look good but these two games both look almost identical, like I kept mixing these two games up while doing the bare minimum research for these mini “reviews.”

And now onto the music which is again..fine, like the music isn’t bad but it kinda just becomes background noise and you forget it’s there, of course if that is what you like in background music then see this as a positive.

Now let's talk about the main thing people want to know about games, the gameplay, how is it?
It’s great, honestly!

I know I have called the rest of the game fine but I think it is hard to mess up pool, from my experience of playing pool games I don’t think I have ever played a bad playing game* and that trend continues here.

In my opinion, you can play it, but there are better-looking games like American Pool on the PS1 or any other pool game.

*the one exception is the pool game on GBA ‘Archer Maclean's 3D Pool’, that is truly terrible, please play any other game
