Questions and Answers “Terpenes” in Tobacco Question: Experimental evidence suggests that tobacco terpenes relate to tumorigenic components in tobacco smoke. To what extent is it possible to grow tobacco with a reduced terpene content while at the same time maintaining “smoke satisfaction?’ Answer: The term “terpenes” is used rather loosely in tobacco technology. In the broad sense, it generally refers to heptane- or hexane-extractable or petroleum ether-extractable materials. These materials may include, among others, the so-called “non-fatty crude lipids,” which contain essential oils and resins. The essential oils contain two major groups: 1) The hydrocarbon oils, or terpenes, and 2) The oxygenated and sulfuretted oils. The resins are oxidation products of the terpenes. Many studies were conducted on hexane-extractables (2,13,14,19). Results indicated that this fraction contained paraffinic and polyenic hydrocarbons, glycerides, solanesol, tocopherols, phytosterols, aliphatic esters, sterol esters, neophytadienes, phtalates, higher fatty acids, polyene, resins, and other acids and bases. Table I lists terpenes and related compounds as summarized by Stedman (12), with some modifications. Many other terpene and related compounds are also reported to be present (19), such as the solanesenes, the Cl3 solanone, phytone, norphytene, unsaturated cyclotetradecanols, diterpene alcohols and lactones, phytol esters, P-carotene, and several compounds with polyisoprenoid side chains, including plastoquinone, solanochromene, and (Ytocopherol. Some of these compounds may require more polar solvents for their extraction. Certain diterpenes, such as dipentene, cr-pinene, myrcene, and possible allo-ocimenes, are formed during burning of the tobacco.
