Let's imagine Jaws without the shark - The spring breakers would still conflict with the residents - The cop would still be burnt out, trying to find a reason to believe - Politicians would still be corrupt - The shark changes everything, endogenous relations are brought into the sphere of an exogenous force, and the disparate desires are recast as selfish, or lacking in community spirit. The shark is castrating *and* phallic. It denies Amity its usual cathexis, and creates conflict. - To think of Amity as boring without the shark is kind of a measure of the degree of Oedipalization. - Castration in this case gives rise to the phallus. Amity is easy to understand, Jaws is essentially a western. - The shark is illegitimate because it determines ahead of time what its final form should be and then passes judgement on all who come before it in the name of that final form.
