I don't know why transsexual repression is not a more commonly discussed aspect of Mizoguchi's work. For me, the psycho-sexual dimension of his feelings of guilt and self-hatred feels inseparable from the sociopolitical concerns unlike mere humanistic empathy (Naruse; Shimizu) There is a fundamental tension in the way that Mizoguchi identifies with his female characters, but then forcibly identifies himself with his male characters. They are a reflection of what he sees as the inevitable in himself, where he will always harm and destroy that which he most desires (womanhood). This is extremely tragic to me! But I do think it is an essential part of his cinema, and one which goes strangely overlooked, especially given the propensity of contemporary audiences to consider the gender dispositions of public figures.

Honestly, Mamdani and his PR team are incredibly savvy. They're doing exactly what they promised: rebuilding the people’s trust in government, but through perception first. Take the Israeli parade. First, he announces he'll be skipping it. That dominates headlines and reinforces the image of a mayor willing to take a bold stand, even at political risk. People who were skeptical start questioning their skepticism because the move feels authentic and principled. Then, after that positive perception takes hold, you get something like the video below. He still announces that he won't attend the parade himself, so he keeps the positive publicity. But at the same time, he says he'll send a member of his administration instead: Jessica Tisch, whom he chose to retain despite her family's well-known ties to Netanyahu. Most people won't notice the distinction. A small number like myself will criticize it, but by then the mass deception has already been established. The public focus shifts from scrutinizing the contradiction to defending the image of a "principled mayor." The net result is growing support, deeper belief in the system, and no political cost for it.

By Democratic Party standards, Fetterman’s position on Israel is extreme. There are a multitude of theories as to why: The senator is a contrarian; he enjoys the attention; he has convinced himself that he is indisputably in the right. But people close to Fetterman cite a previously unreported factor too: Behind the scenes, Fetterman is being encouraged and counseled by a little-known man in his late 30s named David “Dovi” Safier. Safier, a writer of Jewish history and fundraiser for Orthodox causes, has no public background in government or counseling politicians on Capitol Hill. He is not an official staffer or paid outside adviser. A few years ago, he “just kind of appeared” in the senator’s orbit, one former Fetterman staffer remembers. And then, suddenly, he seemed to be everywhere. Staffers would walk into Fetterman’s office, only to find Safier sitting in the room. When the senator went to Israel in 2025, Safier joined him on the trip; when Fetterman filmed Real Time With Bill Maher, Safier met up with him in Los Angeles. The two are constantly texting and talking, according to multiple former Fetterman staffers, and Safier has unofficially operated as a top campaign fundraiser and senior adviser. He has even set up and attended sensitive meetings with foreign officials; in some cases, he is the only person staffing those meetings, I’ve been told.
