@graceblakeley.bsky.social If obesity related hospital admissions doubled in 6 years, what caused the sudden spike? Is it poverty leading to bad diets? Food regulations haven’t changed that much since Brexit surely?

Jacques Peretti’s excellent “The Men Who Made Us Fat/Thin” worth a look too. It was on BBC but taken off iPlayer now.

The West is overfed and undernourished. Food addiction is one of capitalism’s biggest successes. Cheap, non-perishable carbs are the weapon of choice.

The "prescribing food" comment was accidental genius. Food is a lot cheaper than most medications.

This is so upsetting. We need a government that will admit that capitalism has failed billions of people and that without radical change, no law, no policy, and no government will be able to do anything about it. We need an economy that works for the people, not just the rich.

Britain's health *improved* during WWII because the diet changed -- lots of vegetables, some of them raw; minimal meats and fats; and the recipes didn't take a long time because women were working 10+ hours a day and didn't have time. Get "Feeding the Nation - Recipes from 1940-1954" and USE IT.

Yep, malnourished obesity really makes you wonder what TF they’re putting in our “food”

Christ, this is bleak! These are kids.

This shows why all that "you can feed a hundred children for a year with a tenner if you buy a bag of oats" stuff is nonsense. Food is not just calories!

It's shocking, isn't it? I worked on this collection at an old job and it was truly sickening - the food industry needs to be tackled and treated like tobacco and booze industries with far greater regulation on what it can define as food: journals.plos.org/plosmedicine...

So part of our ‘flee fascism by moving to the UK’ plan needs to include acquiring a ton or two of organic food from the coop?! This is scary to read.

My dad - born in 1940's Anfield - couldn't process that I was running a food bank and that people needed it. He was one of the 4 of his mothers 13 pregnancies that made it to adulthood (6 live births), she had malnutrition. He believed the post war dream that things were changing permanently

Presumably we are blaming immigrants and Meghan Markle for this?

Then, to add insult to injury, you have perfectly intelligent liberals shouting down guys like Joel Salatin because he's preaching regenerative agriculture and soil enrichment. Strangely enough it was perfectly intelligent liberals. Many of them anthroposophists who taught me about all those ideas.

GMOs, seed oils, monocroping, chemical fertilizer. If you go to America add a fat stack of industrial herbicides. See also indigestible poisons that cause not just metabolic disorders, but various fun cancers in all of our favorite processed foods.
