According to the BLS, there are only about 50,000 paid career writers in the US. Most are in corporate roles. You would not believe how many prominent "professional writers" are quietly working day jobs or white label freelancing or have other means of income to support their writing gig.

If you really want to make money as a writer, go into a field where writers are paid for a particular skill - technical writing, report writing, advertising copywriting, legal work, etc. High-paying media writing jobs are very competitive and require knowing people. So make some industry friends!
