By “for too long”, I take it you mean two years? The previous 14 years were Tory and it is mostly their housing model. The problem started when Thatcher gerrymandered her election by giving away council houses and no party since has had the courage to stop it.
Three new estates in my area have had a high take up by investors buying to let. It is rumoured that, of those investors, a high proportion are foreign investors. This keeps the market high stopping people getting their first home.

Recently listened to a developer scrap all social housing + S106 obligations. To meet "Viability" + ensure a 17.4% profit margin. They haven't actually built anything yet, and it's been 3 yrs. System is not fit for purpose, developers only develop where there is profit, not need.
are the greens still planning a country wide survey of housing needs? was that ages ago? still a great idea with over a million empty. one in fourteen homes where i am is a "second" home.

There are still people who were miss-sold govmt-backed shared-equity leasehold flats waiting for government to address the issue properly. Many of these were via housing associations who have veto rights on term extension requests. Never pointed out at sale! Govmt supposed to be overseers.
