Jasper Johns said he dreamed of painting a flag, then did. His friend Rachel Rosenthal said he was very interested in his dreams and wrote poems about them. He collaged images of palmreading from a book by Martini the Palmist, who also wrote What Your Dream Meant. wym, jj? greg.org/archive/2026...

my point is, for years I had been skeptical or dismissive of the dream story, thinking it was just a way to shut down further investigation into Flag's origins. But I was wrong, and Johns's early interest in dreams should be considered on its own terms. Also he had the work of Martini the Palmist!
