Excerpt from Violence: The Roleplaying Game of Egregious and Repulsive Bloodshed. It reads: That orc—you know, the orc in that room in the dungeon, you open the door, there’s an orc there. He looks up, a bunch of heavily armed human motherfuckers are charging into the room waving weapons. What’s he supposed to do? Smile broadly and say “Hey, mi casa es su casa, amigos!”? No, he whimpers with fear, pulls out his pigsticker, and prepares to meet his doom. I wanna know about his childhood. Are you telling me he doesn’t have friends who are going to miss him? That he didn’t have hopes and fears and aspirations of his own? That you aren’t a bunch of fucking degraded monsters for wasting him without a second thought? You’re playing a fucking role, okay, you’re supposed to act like a real character in this world. And yet you saunter around, killing intelligent creatures like they’re just another widget, a bunch of pixels to blow away, a mechanism for obtaining experience points and treasure. That isn’t roleplaying. Not as I understand it.

A description of the carbuncle from the 1st edition Fiend Folio. It reads: This small creature is similar to an armadillo with an 'armoured' upper surface of small interlocking 'plates' of tough leathery skin. It feeds exclusively on leaves and small insects and is rarely found outside areas (such as woodland and marshland) where there is a copious supply of such food. Its upper surface armouring is attractively patterned in shades of brown while its underbody is light grey flecked with small green patches. Set in its head, immediately above its eyes, is a large ruby. This is actually part of the animal and if the beast dies the ruby will shatter into worthless dust. The creature may, however, be coaxed into giving up its ruby by a wizard (or anyone of equal status) who uses a charm monster or charm animal ability. The gem is usually (70%) 500 gp value though rare specimens (25%) have 1,000 gp gems and there is a 5% chance that a carbuncle will have a 5,000 gp gem. If successfully removed a carbuncle's gem will regrow a t the rate of 100 gp per month. The value of the gem may change each time it regrows. The creature has empathy and telepathy, communicating via the latter, and also slight powers of prophecy concerning the immediate future. Its power of empathy enables it to understand the character of each person it encounters and know what that person knows, though its intelligence does not permit it t o formulate more than very basic concepts. If attacked, it puts up no resistance and is easily captured. It can will itself to die, however - it has no fear or conception of death and will give up its life if placed under duress. It will usually approach a party of adventurers and communicate the value of its gem to them,

DEADLINE: What are some of your favorite TV shows and films that are baked into your DNA? I also know you’re a video game guy too, so if you want to shout out what you’re playing I won’t stop you. BROOKER: This is going to sound so tragic, but right now there’s a game called Balatro. It’s like poker, and it’s possibly the most addictive thing ever created. It’s currently on Nintendo Switch and Steam deck, but it’s going to be released on phones, and at that point I think humankind’s activity is going to drop about 25%. I play that in short bursts when I’m writing to reward myself. I do like Ghost of Tsushima and Dave the Diver too, but there’s loads more.

Did that even when the trans guy wasn't around. I need to point out that he was completely serious btw. This man had no sense of humor on purpose. Told me he thought women should stay out of kitchens, that cooking is a man's job and when I asked him what he thinks women should be doing, he went quiet for a moment, then proceeded to explain to me the following "I trust a bitch to run a kitchen as much as she can run a country, they should do shit like plumbing. Or electricity. Something you can just learn to do and don't need to lead, you know?" Apparently women are good at "fixing shit". He claimed that he doesn't trust male plumbers or electricians except if they're gay because "something most be wrong with you if you want to go fix other people's houses, that's that maternal instinct"
