I think this is one of those urban myths and when people sleep through an alarm they search for it and find hits only to other people talking about the urban myth. My guess is that it’s from iOS’s confusing audio volume settings, which even I don’t fully understand.

Speaking of this inscrutable UI, from day one of iPhone I’ve never been able to configure alert volumes properly. I want push notification sounds to be relatively quiet, independent of general system volume, but it has never worked. The second slider seems only to affect ringtones.

I think the people who believe they’ve slept through an alarm because of this supposed bug instead have their “Ringtones and Alerts” volume set very low, and the alarms go off and they sleep right through the low-volume alarms. That’s just my guess.
