Charles Widmore faces John Locke on the beach, a strange device between them
The sunlight barely pierces the foliage of the trees. An old hut, patched up over many years, lies over a stream in the middle of the forest. The sound of water mingles with that of animals nearby. Sitting at the water's edge, a silhouette gradually emerges. A woman of indefinite age. She wears a mask made of vines and ferns, which covers and mingles with her hair. In one dirt-stained hand, she holds a long wooden pipe that slips beneath her mask. Wisps of smoke snake around her. A sound catches her attention: the rumble of an airplane echoes through the jungle. She raises her head and whispers in an ageless voice, soft as sap. "You've done it again. You've brought others, haven't you?” Another woman is sitting with her feet in the water. She too is smoking the pipe. But she wears a mask made of slate, held by a chain around her bare, tattooed skull. She releases a puff of smoke that begins to surround her. In a hoarse voice, she replies. "Of course. There'll always be others.” The pipe changes hands with familiarity. The one in the fern mask resumes, after a moment's silence. "They'll go back. They'll change and go back.” "Or they'll stay. Like the others.” The sound of the plane intensifies as they sit there, at the water's edge, exchanging the pipe. Suddenly, a crash rips through the canopy. A terrifying sound of metal breaking apart and engines screaming. Then nothing, until the tremor of the shock reaches here. Birds fly into the forest in panic. Small mammals scurry for cover under the trees. Reptiles freeze. The slate-masked one rises, after a final puff. She disappears behind the hut. "We'll see, once more."
