DEFIANCE.org, Project Salt Box, and Save America Movement asked people to trust them with highly sensitive personal information tied to anti-ICE organizing, telling them “Sign up to tell ICE: Get The Facilities Out at gtfoice.org.” That trust comes with a baseline obligation to protect the people who gave it. Collecting names, phone numbers, and locations without implementing even basic safeguards is not a minor oversight. It is a failure to put the safety of participants first, and that should be the starting point for any accountability moving forward. What appears to have happened to me regarding the GTFOice data breach is that #GTFOice did not take proper security precautions to secure their API and so this hacker / curious person was able to just freely access the personal information. And this lack of basic security measures would appear to be negligence on GTFOice’s part. This wasn’t really a case of someone hacking their way into the GTFOice website. And instead, it looks like they somehow had valid access, and the system just handed over the data. These security lapses are inexcusable and our first thought yesterday when we began looking into this was that someone had probably vibe coded this rubbish, as no competent web developer would be this careless. That suspicion was confirmed when we attempted to visit the site from today’s incident and were met with a Replit 404 “not found” page. But just a week and a half after launching, the site has already shut down after allowing for nearly 18,000 people’s personally identifiable information to be accessed because they didn’t realize that APIs need to be secure. Over the past several days, we signed up for GTFOICE.org using multiple email addresses and phone numbers tied to locations including Hagerstown/Williamsport, Maryland, and Salt Lake City. We never received confirmation emails, texts, or the promised organizing materials. That changed this morning when one of the phone numbers we used received a text message claiming that data submitted through GTFOICE.org had been forwarded to the FBI, HSI, and ICE. The message also attacked the organizations and individuals behind the project. GTFOICE.org has been collecting sensitive information from people organizing against ICE infrastructure in their communities. If that information was exposed or mishandled, it could have serious consequences for activists, immigrants, and organizers who trusted the platform with their personal data.

It’s still not yet understood if the website was a parody or simply another lazily put-together campaign / attempt to promote his personal brand. As Rachel Maddow noted, “They’re calling it a rapid response network to stop ICE prison camps before they start.” An apparent data breach may have compromised user information submitted to GTFOICE.org, a newly launched platform designed to organize opposition to proposed ICE detention facilities across the United States. GTFOICE.org was launched by Miles Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security official and self-described “security expert”, who later founded DEFIANCE.org. The site positions itself as a rapid response network that allows users to sign up for alerts about proposed ICE facilities in their communities and mobilize local opposition. Public materials on the site indicate partnerships with Project Salt Box and the Save America Movement, and its landing page describes the effort as a collaboration between those groups and DEFIANCE.org. Three days ago, we signed up on the platform using multiple email addresses and phone numbers across several locations listed on the site, including Hagerstown and Williamsport, Maryland, as well as Salt Lake City. No confirmation emails or texts were received at the time of signup. That changed this morning. The message also included inflammatory claims about the individuals behind the project. We responded to the message but received no reply. GTFOICE.org is collecting highly sensitive information from individuals organizing against federal immigration enforcement infrastructure. Any compromise of that data could have significant consequences for those involved.

Last night, 80+ local families were displaced after their building was condemned. This is not a case of a building in disrepair and falling down. The owner of the building refused to pay for utilities and all tenants were left without hot water and heat for five days, leading to the city of Hagerstown condemning the building and forcing all to move out last night.
