A fictional novel, set in England, possibly near the moors, about a young girl who went to work in a "big house" as a maid. She had a difficult relationship with her own mother. She's good with a needle and thread and works her way up in the house as a seamstress but really has dreams of becoming a dressmaker. She falls in and out of love with the son of the family who own the house and his mother really doesn't want them having any kind of relationship and trys to keep them apart. The girl leaves the house and moves to France, world war 1 breaks out and she starts a new relationship there but he dies in the war. She still meets the guy on and off from the "big house". Her sister becomes a prostitute and opens a brothel in Paris during all this too. The story ends with her opening up a dress shop in London (maybe) and she goes on to become engaged (maybe married) to the son from the "big house" much to his mother's disappointment.
