Arion (Arion) ater (Linnaeus, 1758) Large Black Slug Arion ater ater Great Black Slug Formerly ubiquitous, this species may be declining as the very closely related Arion rufus and A. vulgaris are spreading. As noted in the Glossary (under ‘subspecies’), there is some evidence that it may interbreed with A. rufus and produce fertile offspring. Both species are very variable in colour. ‘Pure’ A. ater is still common in upland habitats, on lowland heaths and in fens and wet meadows, and in these habitats it is often uniformly black above, with a very dark grey sole. This and the next two species lay large, translucent spherical eggs, up to 5mm diameter, which are only loosely held together.

Neven Sesardić Philosophia 46 (4):981-999 (2018) Abstract Racial profiling has come under intense public scrutiny especially since the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. This article discusses two questions: whether racial profiling is sometimes rational, and whether it can be morally permissible. It is argued that under certain circumstances the affirmative answer to both questions is justified.
Trying to have an orgasm and having an orgasm are, I should imagine, rather widely regarded as each an end in itself, so that the achievement of one may thwart achievement of the other. Though orgasm is an end in itself, to achieve it instantaneously is to defeat the aim of building up to it. And, notoriously, to attend too single-mindedly to the build-up can preclude the orgasm. We might, accordingly, wonder whether the sexual act must be considered a type of game. To see that it need not be, we might begin by noticing that the essential effort in the sexual act we have described seems to be just the effort to balance the trying against the achieving. The effort in a game, however, is simply to win the game, and if the game is well constructed and the players are well matched, then the desired balance between trying and achieving will be realized, although such balance need not (and perhaps should not) be the thing to which the players' efforts are consciously and primarily directed.

Sometimes a paper becomes much cited in the literature because it says something that everyone wants someone else to say. Papers of this sort typically involve extreme positions, logical possibilities that more moderate authors are reluctant to adopt. Such papers often appear to be radical by virtue of promoting views that up to that point have been thought to be absurd. They receive attention because they offer a convenient target for criticism, or because they allow other authors to cite an authority for a position they are unwilling, or unable, to defend themselves. Unfortunately, the price of this sort of fame is sometimes philosophical rigour. I want to argue that Julian Savulescu’s 2001 paper, “Procreative Beneficence: Why We Should Select the Best Children”, is precisely a paper of this sort.
