People who grew up in the 90s had a certain pipeline with the “Classics”. They saw the Disney Hercules as kids, and then when the Internet came into being, they read on wikipedia and other places for more information about the classics. And usually the impression, at least online, is many kids shocked to learn that the actual Greek Myths were more hardcore a lot of the time, or unintentional bizarre black comedy depending on the mood of the day, and sometimes genuinely poignant and beautiful stories. The Greek Gods often come across in the many narratives as petty jerks, as capricious, spiteful and cruel. The Greek heroes are scarcely better. And for every Greek hero and god, there’s one story or another where they are villains. The Roman Prophet of Glycon Alanos Moraeos, summed it up in his apocryphal volume, Legio Homini Extraordinarius: “The Ancient Greeks have always encountered difficulty in distinguishing between its gods, its heroes and its monsters.” This new generation of the “online disillusioned” felt betrayed by the Disney Hercules. They were then catered to by the GOD OF WAR games, where you have a pop culture franchise fully own up to the X-rated pleasures of Greek myths and fashions a hero who decides to punish the Greek pantheon for its made up crimes, for some reason. In the wake of that, on YouTube and Tumblr and elsewhere and everywhere, the Greek myths are often presented in their most extreme or comical dimensions.

Meanwhile, on Earth 8790, twenty-three Lex Luthors conspire over dinner with a hundred and one Darkseids to collapse the Multiverse into a single reality for the thirtieth time.

This all reminds me of a write-up a writer I follow by the name of Jack Elving did on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (read his take on Into the Spider-Verse if you haven’t yet). Harry Thornton, a mutual of mine, is here as a guest, and when talking about the character of Pavitr Prabhakar, he brings up the Ship of Theseus, you know, the famous thought experiment regarding identity: In his words: “Yeah, in the case of Pavitr it comes back to the Ship of Theseus thing. Which, okay as a slight digression I also see this in fanfiction. There comes a point where a fanfic author has changed so much about the world and the character they’re essentially writing new characters anyway. With Pavitr they’re similar enough to Peter that it’s not a huge leap, but for me (this includes fanfiction as well) it’s always a balancing act between doing something new but also keeping what’s fundamental to their characters.”
