This mentality is what gets people killed. 馃が So in short, it's not the weather service that screwed up or were short-staffed, it's the willful ignorance of the local officials that deemed the warnings as nothing to worry about.

Same thing happened last fall when hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina. Local officials decided people didn鈥檛 need to be told to evacuate and lives were lost by flash floods and mudslides.

When I have weather coming, I keep an eagle eye on the radar app (Radar Scope) or (Weather Wize). It is an invaluable tool. If the weather is severe, I do not sleep. I am up on patrol and have a bug-out bag ready. I do not dismiss an alert with complacency.

Yeah if you live in the West US you know how flash floods work, from a young age. That line absolutely infuriated me.
