The new documentary A Precarious State claims to reveal the grim decline of Minnesota, but what it really reveals is how far a camera, some moody lighting, and a few cherry-picked statistics can go toward creating a crisis that doesn’t quite exist. It’s less investigative journalism than ideological theater — a glossy complaint reel stitched together by developers and political operatives nostalgic for the good old days when nobody asked them hard questions. The film’s central story is simple and scary: “defund-the-police” policies unleashed chaos, people and businesses are fleeing, and the state teeters on collapse. Trouble is, the data don’t agree. Minnesota’s violent-crime rates rose during the pandemic, like nearly everywhere else in the United States, and then began trending downward again. Minneapolis homicide counts are lower than their 2021 peak, and overall major crimes have stabilized. The so-called “mass exodus” from the Twin Cities? Metro-area population has grown since 2020, according to the Census Bureau, and the state’s economy remains among the most diversified and resilient in the Midwest. What the filmmakers label “economic devastation” mostly reflects pandemic aftershocks — remote work, e-commerce, and the normal churn of urban business. Yet every closed storefront becomes a symbol of moral decay. Every complicated social issue gets reduced to a single culprit: progressive policy. That’s storytelling, not social science. Perhaps the most precarious part of A Precarious State is its claim to objectivity. Its talking heads are overwhelmingly landlords, conservative commentators, and “public safety” advocates with obvious financial or political stakes. You’ll find little mention of structural inequality, housing shortages, or mental-health crises — the unglamorous realities that make governing hard and sound bites easy.
