She went on to become the lead plaintiff in the legal case Olmstead v. L.C., which was decided by the Supreme Court in 1999. According to her obituary in the NY Times, the court ruled that “warehousing people with developmental disabilities in deficient mental institutions, when they are capable of being integrated into community settings in group homes or host homes, constituted discrimination discrimination under the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).” Lois’ brave work secured her freedom and set important legal precedent in the process.”
