Old B&W photo of 3 people on a grassy bank in front of a house. A man and woman on the left; a young woman a little off to side on the right. The man is in uniform. The young woman on the right is my maternal grandmother. Based on her age in the photo I am guessing the photo was taken in the 1920's. It provokes many questions. My grandmother was a working class woman from Belfast, N. Ireland. Her husband worked at the Harland & Wolff shipyard. Where was the photo taken? I would say it's very unlikely to be Belfast. I recall my mother saying that she would go to Ballywhisken (just south of Millisle, N. Ireland) for summer holidays. Perhaps the photo was taken there? Who took the photo? How common was amateur photography at this time in Ireland? Specifically, who in my grandmother's circle would have had the means to own a camera in the 1920's? What is the uniform that the man is wearing? Who is he? Is the woman next to him his wife or his mother? Are they also relatives of mine? My mother would probably have been able to answer these questions but she sadly died in 1996. So much of history gets lost when people pass away.
