“…last rung was only about four feet under water and I had a rather "gone" feeling as I left it, grabbed the guide line, and began to drop down. It grew darker and darker every second. Suddenly my eardrums started aching from the air pressure. I held still for a minute and swallowed my saliva two or three times, when-click-something in my head popped like a noise from pulling a cork and then it felt fine and clear again. “I landed in a pocket of soft mud and stirred up a cloud of "water dust." I stood there in the dark, shut up in a lonely little world of my own, and listened. I could hear the sound of the pump grinding away, the soft swish of the air itself circulating through the helmet, and a loud noise of air bursting through the small pinholes in the exhaust valve. Everything was just as Jake said it would be, and I felt pretty comfortable and easy. “Gradually the dark cloud settled again on the sea bottom and I discovered I could see around me for about thirty feet. What a weird sight it was! I thought of a goldfish in a bowl, and chuckled a little to myself. A sharp yank on the life line startled me-then I remembered. That was just a question, "Are you all right?" I sent back the answer, one yank, "I'm all right." I began to take a few short, careful steps, eyes wide open for anything I could see. The water was a deep, dark green around me, but when I looked upward I saw it grew lighter in color-like a greenish sky overhead. Underfoot, long flowing strands of seaweed gently rubbed against my legs. It was like walking through a dream field. I came to a patch of white gravel. Hundreds of starfish, all sizes, were scattered about and as I kept on, tiny crabs scuttled out from under my heavy steps. Big, flat skates skimmed along with their noses close to the bottom.”
