According to Jack Taylor, president of The Drive to Protect the Ladies’ Mile District, “All these great buildings, all this shopping, engendered a feeling of opulence. The Falcon Miniature 127 half-frame film cameras were manufactured in New York by the Utility Manufacturing Company. The camera bodies were made of Bakelite and resembled the 35mm Argus A. The image format was 3×4 cm, with dual red windows to advance the film. Most cameras included a compartment for an extra film roll. When B&H began charging over $15 to re-spool 120 film into 127, I started buying cheap Arista.edu film, hand-cutting it in a camera bag, and then re-spooling it onto 127.

Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, the structure is intended to resemble a bird in flight. There are three main points about this from a New York perspective. You are either traumatized by it, but you have to use it. You use it every day, and it doesn't bother you at all because you weren’t here, or you were here and have no reason to ever go down there, so you don’t. I’ve been shooting in Lower Manhattan since 2000. I see a few other street photographers down there now and then, mostly of my age. We all have a hollowed-out look. 3,000 people died here, and now it’s full—really full—of tourists walking around a graveyard, shopping, and lining up to see a crushed firetruck. This location is on the other side, away from everyone.

This image was taken towards the end of 1989 and shows my then 5-year-old daughter being photocopied. I had to work late, and my ex-husband and daughter were with me. Alone in the office, and while I was waiting for something to print, we photocopied our child. I told her to keep her eyes very tightly closed as her dad held her over the machine by the back of her pants and her sweatshirt. Somewhere, there is a copy of her whole body, front and back. She had also recently lost both of her front teeth.

This black and white Holga photo is of my neighbor Faye, who lived across the street from me when I was in Hudson, New York. She is holding her cat, Smoky, an adorable chunky gray and white kitty who constantly crossed back and forth on Union Street from our house to hers. I was always worried it was going to get hit by a car. Faye and I are sitting on her enclosed front porch. By that time in her life, she was pretty much immobile. She never went outside. Smokey would get out every time Faye tried to check the mail. He would come running across the street over to our yard and roll around in the driveway. So I'd pick him up and bring him back over to her and usually visit with her for about an hour or so. Fay was a basket collector, and every wall and nook in her house was filled with wicker baskets. Her daughter, who had passed away years earlier, lived in the apartment above her. Fay had lived on Union Street her entire life. She was born in a house five doors down from her own, and her husband had purchased the current house in the early 40s. Her husband died years ago, and by the time this photo was taken, her daughter had been gone for about two years. Fay passed away roughly a year after this photo was taken.

This is a black-and-white Holga photograph of the storefront of House of Oldies, a vintage record store in New York City. The store was an essential part of the downtown NYC music scene before it closed permanently and can now only be found on Discogs. It was located at 35 Carmine Street in the West Village and was known for its extensive collection of vinyl records. The signs in the window say, "NO CDS NO TAPES VINYL RULES" and "LARGEST SELECTION OF XMAS RECORDS IN NEW YORK."

I believe the church is no longer at this address on Braddock Avenue. It’s still an active church in Braddock. I'm uncertain whether this building is still standing.
This black and white photo is of my daughter when she was 17. We were in DC to cat sit and escape NYC for a few days. It was just three months after 9/11, so we both agreed to look after her uncle's cat. This is a rare shot, as she had not wanted me to take photos of her throughout most of her high school years. The teenager. But this time, I asked her, and she didn't cringe. I love this shot.
Over the years, she was many things, but this was the last version I saw. She was painted all blue and had a hot pink wig. She stood outside Andromeda Tattoo on St. Mark's for years, slowly changing due to the whims of various artists. Before this, she eventually became covered in tattoos. She was a work in progress on St. Mark's.
