It's a weird book. Part essay collection, part autobiography in course work, part manifesto, part introduction to the origin of Homodoxy, part test to see if I could make a book at all.
It really makes you think.

I slept next to him for the night until it was time for church. Quest was awesome. Brenda Salter McNeil preached about the prostitute who asked to be saved from the Israelites when they were going to sack her city. I felt no guilt about A—. I still don’t. I don’t know what God thinks about it, but I’m treating it in the same way I’ve gone through this whole fucking pro- cess. Pray for guidance —> increase transparency —> feel freer —> chalk it up to God working in my life.
By far, the most common provocations made by queer theologians are that christianity is queer and has always been queer! It even must be queer to be true Christianity.7 Such claims are familiar enough. And by now, critiques of such claims may be familiar enough, or may not be! Many texts that make these arguments have valuable insights, and many of these authors have opened up new vistas for queer theology, but the sheer volume of queer work in theology that agrees that “queer = Christian” ought to give one pause… Perhaps I have already divided my readers into two camps: those who enjoy such claims and agree with them, and those who have no use for them. Those in either camp may be familiar with the work of Linn Tonstad, who has written many a page critiquing these types of statements. See the end notes for various citations of her work throughout. Mark D. Jordan’s body of work—especially here, “On Queer Theology Lost”—is also swimming in my head. Dear friend, I hope you are well! I am founding Homodoxy, a small press for gay/queer theology and literature, and I write to ask for your help starting it. In a moment of increasing censorship and fear, we need good writing about LGBTQ faith and sexuality to buoy our spirits, expand our imaginations, and sustain queer life. Too few books of queer spirituality go beyond tired debates about biblical support for gay marriage, gay ordination, and trans people. Much writing from Christian presses rehearses old arguments while ignoring the complexities of queer life and sexuality; academic presses are beholden to the maintenance of academic fields and peer review, which limit the risks their writers can take; and queer presses tend not to focus predominantly on spirituality. Homodoxy will build a home for writers beyond those limits. Inspired by gay liberationist publishers and pietist tract distributors, Homodoxy will publish fables, theology, essays, novels, devotionals, poetry, prayers, translations, and more. Our texts will explore a niche in the market where spirit, sexuality, and craft meet to produce thoughtful and daring queer writing. Homodoxy is open to all genres, and its publishing program will feature two series: 1. Books Reprinted in Contemporary Contexts, or BRICC: BRICC reprints older, out of-print, hard-to-find, and now expensive queer writing. Its name harkens back with tongue in cheek to the iconic brick thrown at Stonewall. A briccis foundational and projectile. We learn the past to break through present barriers and build new futures. The BRICC series will resemble NYRB Classics in featuring new introductions by writers, scholars, and artists that will frame the republished or newly translated text. I am in conversations with the estates of writers I admire and am reaching out to others. Chapter 1 "Prior to Any Book" Kevin Gordon's Pursuit of Sexual Wisdom and the Construction of Historical Theology by Samuel Ernest John Sam Jones, a Welsh Presbyterian seminarian studying at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, wrote home in the summer of 1982. Jones was on scholarship from the World Council of Churches (WCC) to observe how churches "were responding to LGBT folk in the Bay Area," and his letter was a dispatch on the "Christian presence within the gay community" in the Castro. He sent it to the Gay Christian Movement (GCM), a lesbian and gay Christian group in the United Kingdom, to be published in the August 1982 issue of their journal, The Journal of the Gay Christian Movement. In "The Search for Yourself," Jones confirms that San Francisco is a city in which lesbians and gays may live freely (despite occasional incidents of violence). Visiting Polk Street and Castro Street, Jones witnessed many "breeds" of men, all look-alikes!
