www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com NGC 6188 is a large emission nebula located some 4000 light years distant in the southern constellation Ara. This giant molecular cloud is being illuminated by the young star cluster NGC 6193 which in this image appears in the upper centre, almost as if suspended above a cloud of dense nebulosity which forms a great wall across the field of view. The cluster belongs to the Ara OB1 association and is very young, not older than 3 million years, and contains some 30 stars. At the centre of the cluster lies an intensely bright pair of stars; the O-type giants HD 150135 and HD 150136. The latter is in fact itself an extremely close binary with a confirmed third component in an outer eccentric orbit of between 2950 and 5500 days. This triple star system is one of the most massive in our galaxy with the three components containing 64, 40 and 35 solar masses respectively. The intense radiation from the massive stars is slowly eroding the surrounding gas and dust away, sculpting it into the striking forms seen in this image. Within these clouds new stars are currently being born and in some places have already begun to light up the nebulous clouds from within. The intricately shaped dust and gas provide for a stunning interplay of light and shadow throughout the area and the entire scene is littered with thousands of dimmer stars in a multitude of colours. This image shows what I believe is the first amateur detection of light echoes from SN1987a - 33 years after the event! The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from SN1987a is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from the event. Direct light from the supernova was observed on Earth in 1987, and we then see light reflected from dust in the interstellar space arriving later because it has travelled further to reach us. The image was created by subtracting two Luminance images taken almost 8 years apart, on 24th Oct 2012 and 21st Sep 2020 respectively. The light areas in the image represent areas that were brighter in 2012, and dark are areas that were brighter in 2020. The light echoes appear as concentric roughly circular arcs, centered on SN1987a's location. This clearly shows how they have expanded during the 8 years. The echoes also appear to be moving outwards at superluminal speed: With a shift of ~47 pixels in the image, and an image resolution of 0.764"/pixel, the movement corresponds to around 28 light years at the distance of the Large Magellanic Cloud where the supernova occurred (163,000 light years away). This is clearly much faster than the speed of light given there are only 8 years between the images. This apparent superluminal speed is only an illusion though, and does not represent the actual speed of the outward travelling light (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superluminal_motion) To create the difference im...

This infrared image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows an image of protostellar object LRLL 54361 and its rich cosmic neighbourhood, a region called IC 348. The protostar, which is the bright object with fan-like beams of light coming from it, located towards the right of the image, is letting off flashes of light every 25.3 days. Solar Flare Extremely energetic objects permeate the universe. But close to home, the sun produces its own dazzling lightshow, producing the largest explosions in our solar system and driving powerful solar storms.. When solar activity contorts and realigns the sun’s magnetic fields, vast amounts of energy can be driven into space. This phenomenon can create a sudden flash of light—a solar flare. Flares typically last a few minutes and unleash energies equivalent to millions of hydrogen bombs. The above picture features a filament eruption on the sun, accompanied by solar flares. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of NASA's first space servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, we are sharing this gallery of images from all five of the Hubble servicing missions. Astronauts serviced Hubble for the first time in December 1993. Including that trip, there have been five astronaut servicing missions to Hubble between 1993 and 2009. 8 Cassini NAC RGB sets animated. Showing principally Iapetus' southern hemisphere while the trailing hemisphere of the moon is sunlit. The frames were taken between 2011-06-06 and 2011-06-10. This video shows a deep zoom-in on the Hubble Ultra Deep Field area in the Southern constellation of Fornax. Using my Fornax Ultra Deep Field image I show a selection of distant galaxies detected within the boundaries of the famous Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) Cross-checking against the available HUDF catalogues using VizieR, almost 200 galaxies were identified within the HUDF catalogued area. These galaxies range in magnitude from 19 to ~25, with the most distant ones being almost 12 billion light years away! I have selected some of the detected galaxies and shown them with a detail crop from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, each labelled with HUDF catalog number, redshift and distance. Of all my images I feel that this one is the most profound: A relatively empty looking field in the southern constellation Fornax, about the size of the full Moon. This area of the sky is devoid of most bright stars, and contains almost no obscuring interstellar dust or hydrogen emission. The elegant, delicate Cat's Eye is one of the most processed nebulas in the archive. With that in mind, the data was surprisingly a pain to get, being apparently available only as exposures and requiring a DADS request. It was strangely clean for uncombined images, though, and I suspect something got misplaced somewhere along the line. Anyway, I decided I didn't want to go overboard on the processing. The concentric rings are meant to be faint. Intricate knots of Hα are highlighted and sharpened in red and yellow while OIII glows brightly in blue, my favorite colors for both of those filters. I do wish I understood the nuances of the filters better. Both f656n and f658n are listed as Hα and I somehow managed to put the longer wavelength in the green channel instead of the red but it seems to look good like that anyway. Or maybe I mislabeled it. The data was kind of a mess. It should be noted that a lot of the nebula is only visible in a wider field. This is only the inner portion or iris of the Cat's Eye. Located among the incredibly dense star fields of Scorpius lies a beautiful little dark nebula; Barnard 252. There appears to exist very little, if any, information about this striking absorbing cloud, and it has no popular name. I think it bears a strong resemblance to a jumping dolphin so I call it The Dolphin Nebula. This interstellar cloud is sufficiently dense to completely block the light from thousands of background stars in the direction towards our galactic centre. There exist many dark patches such as this one and the most famous is without doubt the Horsehead Nebula in Orion. Another and much larger example, visible to the naked eye when away from city lights, is the large dark patch near the Southern Cross known as the Coalsack Nebula. These clouds are full of tiny dust particles, each less than a micrometre in size. Optical wavelengths are easily absorbed by this dust and therefore the nebulae appear dark against any background light. However, radio and infrared wavelengths can penetrate the clouds and allow a peek inside where star formation often occurs. In the early 1900's the american astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard complied a catalogue of dark nebulae by studying his many photographs of the Milky Way. Barnard was also an avid visual observer and discovered 15 comets, Jupiter's small moon Amalthea and Barnards Star the second closest star to our solar system. What a crazy night, we went into it not expecting much since the solar storm was forecast for after sunrise in central Europe. However, before the sun had even set, I got the alert that the first CME had impacted Earth, so the chances immediately looked a lot better. What then unfolded surpassed even our wildest expectations. We ended up driving to this satellite ground station south of Ammersee in southern Bavaria and just when we arrived we spotted the first diffuse pillars north of us. We experienced three waves of incredibly strong Aurora, especially for our rather Southern latitude. During the second wave we saw individual pulsating filaments dancing over our heads. What a breathtaking experience! Many thanks to Christopher for accompanying me on this adventure, Max for being an all round great guy, and Sebastian who lent me his wide angle lenses that made these shots possible.

Middle school students programmed a camera aboard the International Space Station -- the Sally Ride EarthKAM -- to photograph this portion of the Sahara desert in western Libya on October 3, 2016. In early November 2016, the Expedition 50 crew set up the EarthKAM gear once again in the Harmony module’s Earth-facing hatch window, to allow students to photograph targets on Earth and downlink the imagery. EarthKAM is the only program providing students with such direct control of an instrument on a spacecraft orbiting Earth, teaching them about environmental science, geography and space communications. The project was initiated by Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, in 1995 and called KidSat; the camera flew on five space shuttle flights before moving to the space station on Expedition 1 in 2001. The southern California wildfires could be seen by the International Space Station crew from their vantage point in low Earth orbit. NASA image release August 10, 2012 Turning its eye to the Tarantula Nebula, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has taken this close-up of the outskirts of the main cloud of the Nebula. The bright wispy structures are the signature of an environment rich in ionized hydrogen gas, called H II by astronomers. In reality these appear red, but the choice of filters and colors of this image, which includes exposures both in visible and infrared light, make the gas appear green. These regions contain recently formed stars, which emit powerful ultraviolet radiation that ionizes the gas around them. These clouds are ephemeral as eventually the stellar winds from the newborn stars and the ionization process will blow away the clouds, leaving stellar clusters like the Pleiades. Located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of our neighboring galaxies, and situated at a distance of 170,000 light-years away from Earth, the Tarantula Nebula is the brightest known nebula in the Local Group of galaxies. It is also the largest (around 650 light-years across) and most active star-forming region known in our group of galaxies, containing numerous clouds of dust and gas and two bright star clusters. A recent Hubble image shows a large part of the nebula immediately adjacent to this field of view. The cluster at the Tarantula nebula’s center is relatively young and very bright. The Angel Nebula is a strikingly colourful nebula that includes NGC 2170 and NGC 2182. It is located some 2,500 light-years away towards the constellation Monoceros and is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a region of active star formation in our Milky Way galaxy. The Angel Nebula owes its name to the ethereal and delicate appearance of its dust and gas clouds, which resemble the outstretched wings of an angel. The interplay of light, dust, and gas makes the nebula one of the most colourful areas in the entire sky. The celestial scene features subtle variations in colour and intensity throughout its expanse, adding complexity and depth to the nebula's overall appearance. These variations are primarily due to differences in the density and composition of the interstellar material within the nebula, as well as variations in the temperature and luminosity of the embedded stars. Within the nebula, several young, massive stars are concealed by the surrounding dust and gas clouds. These stars are part of the ongoing process of star formation and their intense radiation and powerful stellar winds contribute to the nebula's intricate structure and colourful glow. Illuminated by the brilliant, hot stars within and around it, the nebula glows, scatters and reflects their light to produce a stunning display of colours.
