Uhhhhhhh. No. That's not how this works. That's not how _any_ of this works (a point the book makes later more elegantly, I'll post the author's concluding point next) From an occultism standpoint I actually find this idea—that the unconscious is this invisible protective force—vaguely horrific

The authors concluding point in this chapter, which I wholly endorse and not just in a hypnosis context. You _cannot_ ethically rely on the supposed "unconscious" to protect people. Ever. Full stop. Sure I can add nuance with training a witness, but that's not unconscious (and it is training).
